حدثني أبو عبد الله الأصبَهاني، حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن رُسْتَه، حدثنا سليمان بن داود، حدثنا الواقديّ، حدثنا عُمر بن عثمان الجَحْشي، عن آبائه، عن أمّ قَيْس بنت مِحصَنٍ، قالت: توفي رسولُ الله ﷺ وعُكّاشة ابن أربعين سنةً، وقُتل بعد ذلك بسنة ببُزَاخة في خلافة أبي بكر سنة ثنتي عشرةَ، وكان عُكّاشة من أجملِ الناسِ (1).
Sayyidah Umm Qays bint Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him) was forty years old, and one year after that, in the year 12 AH, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), he was martyred at Buzakhah. Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him) was among the most handsome of people.

(1) وهو في "الطبقات الكبرى" لابن سعد 3/ 86 عن محمد بن عمر الواقدي، غير أنه قال في روايته: وعكاشة ابن أربع وأربعين سنة. وابنُ سعد أوثق من سليمان بن داود: وهو الشاذكوني. وأخرج ابن سعد 3/ 432 قصة استشهاد عُكّاشةَ بن محصن ببزُاخة بطولها عن محمد بن عمر الواقدي، عن سعيد بن محمد بن أبي زيد، عن عيسى بن تُميلة الفزاري، عن أبيه مرسلًا، وفيه: أنَّ قاتِلَ عكاشة هو طُلَيحة وسلمة ابنا خويلد الأسدي.
Reference / Source: This narration is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/ 86) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, except that he said in his narration: "'Ukkashah was 44 years old."
Assessment of narrator: Ibn Sa'd is more reliable than (the narrator) Sulayman bin Dawud (who is al-Shadhakuni).
Details of the narration: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 432) recorded the detailed account of the martyrdom of 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan at Buzakhah by way of al-Waqidi from 'Isa bin Tumaylah al-Fazari, from his father, in "mursal" form, in which it states that the killers of 'Ukkashah were Tulayhah and Salamah (both sons of Khuwaylid al-Asadi).
قال البيهقي في "الدلائل" 6/ 353: مشهور فيما بين أهل المغازي أنَّ عكاشة استُشهد في أيام أبي بكر الصديق ﵁.
Historical note: Imam al-Bayhaqi says in "al-Dala'il" (6/ 353): "It is well known among the scholars of the Maghazi (the biographers) that 'Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred during the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)."
