Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5078

It is narrated from Umar bin Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin al-Khattab that whenever any calamity befell Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), he would say: "I was afflicted by (the martyrdom of) Zayd bin al-Khattab, and I bore it with patience." Once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the killer of his brother Zayd and said to him: "Woe to you! You have martyred a brother of mine such that whenever the east wind (saba) blows, I am reminded of him."
Mention of the virtues of Ukkashah bin Mihsan bin Qays bin Murrah bin Kathir (may Allah be pleased with him), who took part in Badr, Uhud, al-Khandaq and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and whose kunyah was Abu Mihsan.

Hadith Grading

Grading: This is a "hasan report", and there is no harm in the narrators of this chain, except that it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (The narrator) 'Umar bin Abd al-Rahman bin Zayd bin al-Khattab is a Successor (tabi'i) who did not live in the time of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), which is why the wording of irsal is used here.
Identification of narrators: "Sufyan" means Ibn 'Uyaynah, "'Amr" means Ibn Dinar al-Makki, "Muhammad bin al-Sabbah" means Ibn Sufyan al-Jarjara'i, and "Muhammad bin Ishaq" means al-Sarraj.
Details of the narration: The statement of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), "Whenever the east wind (saba) blows, I remember my brother Zayd bin al-Khattab", is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, and Abu Zur'ah al-Dimashqi mentioned it in the "Chapter on Brothers" of his "Tarikh" (as found in Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's "al-Isti'ab", p. 241).
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is "mursal".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is reported from Abd al-Wahid bin Abi 'Awn and Abd al-'Aziz bin Ya'qub al-Majishun by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 351).
Technical note: In its chain up to these two is Ibn Sa'd's teacher "al-Waqidi", but, as you can see, al-Waqidi is not alone in narrating it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar is narrated from al-Qasim bin Ma'n al-Mas'udi by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Hamm wa al-Huzn" (140), and by way of him al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9727) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Ta'ziyat al-Muslim" (21).
Grading: This narration is also "mursal", and some of its narrators have weakness.
Important point: The mursal narration of Ibn Sirin (which has already passed at number 5076) states explicitly that the name of the killer of Zayd bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was "Abu Maryam al-Hanafi".
