Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5065

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order (concerning those killed at Badr), and they were thrown into a well. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood over them and, addressing them, said: "O people of the well! Have you found true what your Lord promised you? For I have found true what my Lord promised me." His Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Are you speaking to people who have died? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They now know that what your Lord promised you is absolutely true." Then, when the order was given concerning them and they began to be dragged away, as the father of Abu Hudhayfah bin Utbah (Utbah) was dragged towards the well, signs of displeasure appeared on Abu Hudhayfah's face. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Abu Hudhayfah! By Allah, it seems that what has happened to your father has grieved you?" He said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I have no doubt about Allah and His Messenger (being true); but the matter is that my father was an extremely forbearing, sound-minded and insightful man, so I hoped that this understanding and insight of his would bring him to the guidance of Islam. But when I saw that the opportunity had been lost and his end was what it was (upon disbelief), that grieved me. The narrator says: Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for good for him.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) This chain is "hasan" on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration has passed from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) through another sahih route (at number 3569), but the story of Abu Hudhayfah bin 'Utbah is not in it.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (43/26361) narrated it via Ibrahim bin Sa'd, and Ibn Hibban (7088) via Jarir bin Hazim, both from Muhammad bin Ishaq; however, Ibrahim bin Sa'd did not mention the story of Abu Hudhayfah bin 'Utbah in his narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): From Ibn Ishaq, only Yunus bin Bukayr and Jarir bin Hazim narrated this story of Abu Hudhayfah bin 'Utbah as "mawsul" (connected), whereas others mentioned it as "balaghan" (without a chain), such as Ziyad al-Bakka'i ("Sirat Ibn Hisham" 1/639) and Salamah bin al-Fadl (al-Tabari's "Tarikh" 2/457).
