Mustadrak al-Hakim 5055 — Virtues of Abu Hudhayfah, Hushaym bin Utbah

Muhammad bin Umar states that Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) had accepted Islam before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Dar al-Arqam, and he was among those who made both emigrations (to Abyssinia and to Madinah).
Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) took part in the Battle of Badr and challenged his father Utbah to single combat. When he called his father to single combat, his sister Hind bint Utbah said (these verses in condemnation of him): "The squint-eyed one, with a gap in his front teeth and an ill omen, Abu Hudhayfah is the worst of people in the matter of religion. Did you not show gratitude to the father who raised you in childhood, until you grew into a strapping young man?"

Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (1) This narration is found in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (3/80) via al-Waqidi; al-Waqidi narrated it from Muhammad bin Salih bin Dinar al-Tammar, from Yazid bin Ruman, as "mursal".
Details of the narration: It mentions the acceptance of Islam by Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), and al-Waqidi reported from his teachers that he took part in both emigrations to Abyssinia.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn Ishaq mentioned him among the first to accept Islam, in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/259).
Reference / Source: Among those who counted him among the emigrants to Abyssinia are 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr (al-Tabarani 8316; Ibn 'Asakir 52/268), Musa bin 'Uqbah (Ibn 'Asakir 52/268) and Muhammad bin Ishaq ("Sirat Ibn Hisham" 1/324).
