فحدَّثنا أبو عبد الله الأصبَهاني، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن عبد الله بن رُسْته، حَدَّثَنَا سليمان بن داود، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن عمر، حدثني سعيد (2) بن مالك الغَنَوي، عن أبيه: أنه شَهِدَ مَرثَد بن أبي مَرثَدٍ يوم بدر على فرسٍ يُقال له: السَّبَل. قال محمد بن عُمر: واستُشهِد مَرثَدُ بن أبي مَرثدٍ الغَنَوي فيما بين أُحُدٍ والخَنْدق في صفرٍ سنة أربعٍ (3). هذا يَدلُّ على أنَّ مرثدًا استُشهِد قبل أبيه أبي مَرثَد بثمان سنين، فإنّ أبا مَرثدٍ مات على فراشِه بالمدينة في خلافة أبي بكر سنة اثنتي عشرةَ. جَهِدتُ في طلب حديثٍ يُسندُه مَرثدٌ عن رسول الله ﷺ، فلم أجد إلَّا الحديثَ الذي:
Sa'id bin Malik al-Ghanawi narrates from his father that he saw Sayyiduna Marthad bin Abi Marthad (may Allah be pleased with him) on the Day of Badr riding a horse called "al-Sabal". Muhammad bin Umar said: The martyrdom of Marthad bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) took place in the period between the Battle of Uhud and the Battle of al-Khandaq, in Safar of the year 4 AH. This indicates that Sayyiduna Marthad was martyred eight years before his father Abu Marthad, for Abu Marthad (may Allah be pleased with him) lived on until his death in Madinah during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) in the year 12 AH. I tried hard to find a hadith that Sayyiduna Marthad narrates directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but I did not find any narration except this one hadith:

(2) كذا في نسخنا الخطية، وفي "مغازي الواقدي" و "طبقات ابن سعد": سعد، بلا ياء.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this name is like this (Sa'id), but in al-Waqidi's "al-Maghazi" and Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" the name is recorded as "Sa'd", without the "ya'".
(3) وهو في "مغازي محمد بن عمر الواقدي" 1/ 27 و 35 وعنه رواه محمد بن سعد في "طبقاته الكبرى" 3/ 45، غير أنه جاء فيهما قول الواقدي في سنة الرجيع التي استُشهد فيها مرثد: على رأس ستة وثلاثين شهرًا من مُهاجَر رسول الله ﷺ.
Reference / Source: (3) This narration is in al-Waqidi's "al-Maghazi" (1/27, 35), and Muhammad bin Sa'd reported it from him in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/45).
Details of the narration: In these books there is al-Waqidi's statement that the expedition of al-Raji' (in which Marthad was martyred) took place at the start of the 36th month after the Hijrah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
سليمان بن داود: هو الشاذكُوني المِنْقَري.
Note / Clarification: Sulayman bin Dawud is "al-Shadhakuni al-Minqari".
