Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5046

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the Day of Badr there were only two horses with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in the whole army), one of which belonged to Sayyiduna Marthad bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other to Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), as was explained at number (4378), but this narration is "mursal".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr is matched in this narration by Yazid bin Ruman, which is found in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (2/21), and it contains the addition: "and a horse on which al-Miqdad bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) rode".
Reference / Source: Likewise al-Waqidi said in "al-Maghazi" (1/27), quoting from his teachers; then he said: "There is no disagreement among us that al-Miqdad had a horse."
Note / Clarification: It will come later from al-Waqidi at number (5048) that the name of Marthad's horse on the day of Badr was "al-Sabal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): From 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) (via Ibn 'Abbas), at numbers (2538, 4344) earlier and (5651) later, the two horses of al-Miqdad and al-Zubayr are mentioned, without any mention of Marthad's horse.
Grading: This narration from 'Ali is weak because of "inqita'" (a break), and moreover another sahih chain from him reports the opposite: "On the day of Badr there was no horseman among them except al-Miqdad."
Reference / Source: Ibn Ishaq mentioned that Marthad bin Abi Marthad, 'Ali and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took turns riding a single camel; this is mentioned in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/612).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is also the view of Imam al-Zuhri and Musa bin 'Uqbah, as in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/101-106). And Allah knows best.
