(2). Sayyiduna Abu Kabshah al-Saluli (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him out as a guard (sentry). When morning came, he returned, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to the Companions): "Here comes your companion, who has endured hardship (all night) for your sake." Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you get down from your horse tonight?" He said: No, O Prophet of Allah! By Allah, I did not get down except to relieve myself. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if you do no (further voluntary) deed after this (deed), you need not worry." Yahya bin Hamzah said: I mentioned this hadith to Imam al-Awza'i, and he told me that Hassan bin Atiyyah also used to narrate this hadith.
This is a great virtue of Sayyiduna Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him), which the descendants of Yahya bin Hamzah al-Dimashqi are alone in narrating from Imam al-Awza'i through their forefathers, and all of them are trustworthy narrators. Also (begins) the mention of the virtues of Marthad bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was martyred along with Sayyiduna Asim bin Adi (may Allah be pleased with him), and they were six persons in all.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The chain is "da'if" (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Yahya (bin Hamzah) al-Dimashqi is weak; he used to narrate munkar (objectionable) reports, and in old age he would be prompted (i.e. he would narrate other people's material with his own chain). As Ibn Hibban stated in "al-Thiqat", his father Muhammad bin Yahya was thiqah, but caution is necessary with his narrations because of his sons Ahmad and 'Ubayd, as they would insert extraneous material into their father's narrations. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain there is a narrator, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad bin Yahya bin Khalid bin 'Amr, about whom nothing is known as to who he is; he appears only in this chain, so he is "majhul al-'ayn" (unknown in person). Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is "mahfuz" (established as correct) in this hadith is that it is from the narration of Abu Kabshah al-Saluli from Sahl bin al-Hanzaliyyah, and that the actual person of this story is Anas (or, according to one view, Unays) bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him), as has passed with a sahih chain at numbers (784) and (2464). Important point: Therefore this hadith is not of Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi, nor is it about his virtue; rather, it is about the virtue of his son Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah is the One who grants success.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts this chapter heading (tarjamah) had come before narration number (5037), whereas its original and proper place is here, because it is from here that the author (al-Hakim) begins the virtues of Marthad bin Abi Marthad (may Allah be pleased with him).
