Khalifah bin Khayyat states that the name of Sayyiduna Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) is Kannaz bin Husayn bin Yarbu' bin Amr bin Yarbu' bin Kharashah bin Sa'd bin Tarif bin Hullan bin Ghanm (bin Ghani) bin A'sur bin Sa'd bin Qays Aylan.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (5) What is established from our manuscripts is "Hallan", with an undotted "ha'"; in (Z) the sign of non-dotting has been placed under the "ha'", while the printed edition has "Jallan" with a dotted "jim" in place of the undotted "ha'". Abu Dharr al-Khushani mentioned in his commentary on the Sirah of Ibn Hisham (p. 172) that this name has been narrated both with "jim" and with undotted "ha'", and then said: its correct form is with "jim". The name is vocalized in al-Mizzi's "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" with an undotted "ha'" carrying a dammah ("Hullan"), and al-Qalqashandi spelled it out in "Nihayat al-Arab" (p. 240), saying: with a dammah on the "ha'" and a doubled "lam". In al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" 19/ (431), with his chain to Ibn Ishaq, it reads: "Abu Marthad Kannaz bin Husayn bin Jallan, and it is also said Hallan", mentioning both views; but we do not think this is Ibn Ishaq's own statement, because Ibn Hisham in his "Sirah" (1/678) mentioned only one form from Ibn Ishaq, which in most of its manuscripts is with "jim" and in one manuscript with undotted "ha'", as its editors have pointed out. Reference / Source: Majd al-Din Ibn al-Athir vocalized it in the biographies section of "Jami' al-Usul" (p. 814) as "Jillan" (with a kasrah under the "jim" and a doubled "lam"), and likewise his brother 'Izz al-Din Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (in the biography of Anas bin Abi Marthad). Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi also vocalized it this way in "al-Tawdih" under the letter "jim". Ibn Durayd in "al-Ishtiqaq" (p. 323) mentioned only "Jillan" with a kasrah on the "jim", saying that it is of the pattern "fi'lan" from their saying "jalaltu al-shay'" (I took the greater part of the thing). And Allah knows best.
