Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5032

It is narrated from Umm Mubashshir (may Allah be pleased with her): I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what do you perceive regarding this suffering of yours? For I consider the cause of my son's death to be none other than that poisoned food which he ate with you at Khaybar." Her son, Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur, had died before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And I too consider nothing other than that to be the cause (of my suffering). This is the time when my aorta is being severed."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its narrators are thiqah, but there is disagreement over Ma'mar bin Rashid about narrating it as connected or as mursal, as was explained at number (4441).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam 'Abd al-Razzaq mentioned (as Abu Dawud reported from him after hadith 4513) that Ma'mar would sometimes narrate this hadith as mursal and we would write it down, and sometimes he would narrate it as musnad (connected) and we would write it down that way, and all of it is sahih in our view. 'Abd al-Razzaq said that when Ibn al-Mubarak came to Ma'mar, Ma'mar narrated to him as musnad (connected) hadiths that he used to leave as mawquf (or mursal).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Likewise, disagreement is reported over Imam al-Zuhri in it, as was explained earlier, and this incident was well known among the family of Ka'b bin Malik. Because Imam al-Zuhri had broad knowledge and narrated abundantly, it is not unlikely that different versions of it (connected and mursal) are transmitted from him.
Reference / Source: It is in "Musnad Ahmad" (39/23933), and from there Imam Abu Dawud (4514) recorded it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Musnad Ahmad it reads "from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin Ka'b bin Malik, from his mother, that Umm Mubashshir entered", whereas in "Sunan Abi Dawud" the word "anna" (that) has dropped out, so that the wording became "from his mother Umm Mubashshir".
Note / Clarification: Abu Sa'id bin al-A'rabi (a narrator of the Sunan) said that Abu Dawud said "from his mother" in this way, but the correct reading is "from his father, from Umm Mubashshir".
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4513) narrated it with the chain 'Abd al-Razzaq from Ma'mar from al-Zuhri from Ibn Ka'b bin Malik from his father, that Umm Mubashshir said (the hadith).
Reference / Source: This narration has already passed in abridged form at number (4441) via Yunus bin Yazid from al-Zuhri from 'Urwah from 'A'ishah, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is mentioned addressing 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
