Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5026

It is narrated from Jabalah bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him), the brother of Zayd bin Harithah, that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not go out on a military campaign himself, he would give his weapons only to Sayyiduna Ali or Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with them both) (for safekeeping or as an honour).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) Its chain is weak because of "inqita'" (a break) between Abu Ishaq ('Amr bin 'Abd Allah al-Sabi'i) and Jabalah bin Harithah, and Ibrahim bin Yusuf (al-Sabi'i) has "lin" (some weakness). However, he is not alone in it; he has been corroborated, but there is disagreement over this hadith on Abu Ishaq (as will come).
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad 39/ (24009/ 3) from Aswad bin 'Amir > Sharik al-Nakha'i > Abu Ishaq > Jabalah: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not go out on a military expedition, he would give his weapons to 'Ali or Usamah."
Note: Here Usamah bin Zayd is mentioned, not his father!
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sharik al-Nakha'i was matched in mentioning Usamah by Isra'il bin Yunus (al-Sabi'i), but he narrated it from his grandfather as "mursal" [Ahmad, "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (965)].
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibrahim bin Yusuf al-Sabi'i was matched (in mentioning Zayd bin Harithah in the text) by Hudayj bin Mu'awiyah, but there is disagreement over Hudayj in its chain, and he himself has "da'f" (weakness). Sometimes he narrates it from Abu Ishaq > Jabalah bin Harithah [Abu Nu'aym, "Tarikh Asbahan" 2/ 222], and sometimes from Abu Ishaq, who said: "Jabalah bin Harithah was among the tribe, and the tribe came to him and said", and he mentioned several hadiths, one of which is our hadith [al-Baghawi, "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (317)].
