It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I took part in seven military campaigns with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I fought in nine campaigns in the company of Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed him as our commander.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The text is established from manuscripts (Z) and (B). In manuscripts (S) and (M) it is "bi-Baghdad wa Baradan"; "Baradan" is one of the villages of Baghdad, seven farsakhs away from it. The author's habit is to mention hearing from this teacher of his in Baghdad (as he has stated repeatedly). Perhaps he heard from him in that village and, since it is a village of Baghdad, he said "in Baghdad"; or perhaps his teacher al-Qantari used to go back and forth between the two places. And Allah knows best.
Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "qawi" (strong) on account of Abu Qilabah ('Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-Raqashi); he has been corroborated. Abu 'Asim (in the chain) is al-Dahhak bin Makhlad al-Shaybani. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (7174) narrated it via Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin Numayr > Abu 'Asim, with this same chain. Reference / Source: al-Bukhari (4272) narrated it from Abu 'Asim, but he abridged the number of expeditions in which Ibn Harithah was made commander, and he said "Ibn Harithah" without naming him, even though all the students of Abu 'Asim narrated it from him in full, with the explicit name (Zayd bin Harithah). Important point: Al-Bukhari's excuse for this abridgement is that someone other than Abu 'Asim narrated it with the wording: "I went on seven military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and went out on nine of the expeditions he sent, with Abu Bakr as our commander once and Usamah bin Zayd once." Reference / Source: Likewise al-Bukhari (4270) and Muslim (1815) narrated it via Hatim bin Isma'il, and al-Bukhari (4271) via Hafs bin Ghiyath, both of them from Yazid bin Abi 'Ubayd > Salamah bin al-Akwa'.
