It is narrated from Abu Umamah bin Sahl that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished with the Battle of Badr, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent two bearers of good news to the people of Madinah: he sent Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) to the people of the lower area (al-Safilah) and Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) to the people of the upper area (al-Aliyah), so that they would give the people the good news of the victory that Allah had granted to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived just as his son Usamah had finished levelling the earth over the grave of Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Usamah was told: "Look, your father has come." Usamah said: I came, and he was standing before the people (announcing the victory), saying: "Utbah bin Rabi'ah, Shaybah bin Rabi'ah, Abu Jahl bin Hisham, Nubayh, Munabbih and Umayyah bin Khalaf have been killed." I asked: "O dear father! Is this true?" He said: "Yes, by Allah, O my dear son!"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" the chain mentions "Abu Umamah bin Sahl", whereas he is not mentioned in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" 3/ 187 and "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 9/ 183 (which he narrated from al-Hakim with this same chain). Nor is he mentioned in the narration of Ziyad al-Bakka'i from Ibn Ishaq ["Sirat Ibn Hisham" 2/ 51], nor in the narration of Salamah bin al-Fadl from Ibn Ishaq ["Tarikh al-Tabari" 2/ 487]. Important point: What appears is that the mention of Abu Umamah bin Sahl in the chain is a "wahm" (error). And Allah knows best.
Technical note / Lexicon: (1) (The word in the text means): he levelled it with the earth.
Grading: (2) This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (sound due to supporting evidence); its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), but it is "mursal". It seems that the report is from the Musnad of Usamah bin Zayd himself, as the context indicates. If the mention of Abu Umamah bin Sahl is correct, the chain could be connected and hasan, but, as has passed, this mention is found only with the author (al-Hakim). If it is not correct, then the chain is "munqati'" (broken), because 'Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr bin Hazm and Salih bin Abi Umamah did not meet Usamah bin Zayd. And Allah knows best. Reference / Source: al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 9/ 183 and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 3/ 187 from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain, but Abu Umamah bin Sahl is not in it. Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham also narrated it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" 2/ 51 from Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah al-Bakka'i, and al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" 2/ 487 via Salamah bin al-Fadl, both of them from Ibn Ishaq. (7029). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the mursal hadiths of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr and al-Zuhri, which will come at numbers (7024) and (7029).
