Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5022

Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out while I was riding behind him on his mount. We came to one of the idols of the polytheists, and we slaughtered a sheep for it and placed it in the oven. When it was cooked, we took it out and put it in our food cloth. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded, in the days of intense heat in Makkah, towards the upper part of the valley of Makkah, until he met Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl there, and the two of them greeted each other in the manner of the Jahiliyyah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Why is it that I see your people displeased with you and averse to you?" He said: "By Allah! I had no old quarrel or blood feud with them, but I see them upon misguidance." He further said: "I set out in search of this true religion until I came to the scholars of Yathrib. I found that they worship Allah and also associate partners with Him, so I said: This is not the religion that I am seeking. Then I went to the scholars of Khaybar and found the same there. Then I went to the scholars of Aylah and found them too associating partners with Allah alongside worshipping Him, so I said: This is not the religion that I am seeking. Then a scholar of al-Sham said to me: You are asking about a religion upon which, to our knowledge, no one worships Allah purely except an old man in al-Jazirah (of Arabia). So I went to him and explained my purpose. He said: All those you have seen are upon misguidance. The religion you are seeking is the religion of Allah and of His angels. A prophet has appeared in your own land, or is about to appear, who will call to it. Go back to him, affirm his truth, follow him and believe in him. So I came back, and I have not yet received any further news (of the sending of that prophet)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made his camel kneel, and we presented to him the food cloth that had the roasted meat in it. He (Zayd bin Amr) asked: "What is this?" We said: "This is a sheep that we slaughtered in the name of such-and-such idol." So he (Zayd bin Amr) said: "I do not eat what has been slaughtered in the name of other than Allah." In Makkah there were two copper idols called Isaf and Na'ilah, which the polytheists would touch during tawaf. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf and I was with him. When I passed by them, I touched them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not touch them." Zayd said: We then did tawaf again, and I said to myself: I will certainly touch them so that I may see what he says. So when I touched them, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were you not forbidden?" Zayd said: By the One who honoured him and sent down the Book upon him! After that I never touched an idol until Allah honoured him (peace and blessings be upon him) with the station of prophethood with which He honoured him and sent down the Book upon him. And Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl had died before his (peace and blessings be upon him) being sent as a prophet, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about him: "He will come on the Day of Resurrection as a nation by himself."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Whoever reflects on this hadith will come to know the virtue of Zayd and his precedence in Islam even before the call (to Islam).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Lexicon: (2) (The word in the text means): they bore hatred towards you.

Technical note / Lexicon: (3) "al-nathirah" means enmity and rancour.

Note / Clarification: (4) This text is established from manuscripts (Z) and (B), al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", and one of the manuscripts of al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/ 125 (where al-Bayhaqi narrated it from the author (al-Hakim)). The implied sense of the wording is: "We know of no one who worships Allah according to a religion other than his." In manuscripts (S) and ('A) there is "ta'ala" in place of "bi-ghayrihi"; in (M) it is not clear; and in the printed edition it is "bihi". It is likewise in the other sources, and the meaning is clear.

Note / Clarification: (1) The text is established from manuscript (Z). In (S) and ('A) it is "ahsan", and perhaps it is the same in (M). My view is that it is a corruption of "akhbar" or "uhiss". In the margin of (Z) "uhiss" is written, and in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" it is also "uhiss". This is close in meaning to "akhbar" (i.e. to learn of the news).

Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts it is "sanaman" (in the accusative), whereas we have established it in the nominative from "Talkhis al-Mustadrak". It is likewise in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/ 34. This is in accordance with the standard usage (al-jaddah), because "kana" here is complete (tammah), so "sanam" is its subject (in the nominative).

Note / Clarification: (3) It is like this in the manuscripts, whereas in "al-Dala'il" it is "Isaf aw Na'ilah" (with "or"), and this is more fitting, because all the following pronouns are singular.

Note / Clarification: (4) In manuscript (Z), (M) and "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" it is "biha".

Grading: (5) Its chain is "hasan" on account of Muhammad bin 'Amr (Ibn 'Alqamah al-Laythi). He is "saduq" (truthful), but he made some errors [as Ibn Hajar said in "al-Taqrib"].
Technical note / Text: Part of this hadith contains a clear "nakarah" (objectionable content), as al-Dhahabi said in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 1/ 222, meaning these words: "We went to one of the idols and slaughtered a sheep for it", up to his words: "and we put it in our food-mat."
Reference / Source: al-Nasa'i (8132) narrated it from Musa bin Hizam > Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The first story (the incident of Zayd bin 'Amr bin Nufayl) is supported by the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in al-Bukhari (3826) and (3827) and elsewhere, but it does not mention slaughtering for idols. Regarding the story of the food-mat, it states there that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered Zayd bin 'Amr a food-mat with meat on it, and he refused to eat from it and said: "I do not eat what you slaughter on your idols; I only eat that over which the name of Allah has been mentioned."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This story is also supported by the hadith of Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in Ahmad 3/ (1648) and elsewhere. In it, regarding the food-mat: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Zayd bin Harithah were in Makkah, and Zayd bin 'Amr bin Nufayl passed by them, so they invited him to their meal. He said: "O son of my brother! I do not eat what has been slaughtered on the idols." The narrator said: After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen eating anything that had been slaughtered on the idols.
General principle: Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Harbi, after recording this hadith in "Gharib al-Hadith" 2/ 791, said: "His statement (we slaughtered a sheep for an idol) has two possible explanations: either Zayd (bin Harithah) did it without the command or approval of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but since he was with him it was attributed to him as well, because Zayd did not have the protection and divine guidance that Allah had given to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). How could that be possible, when in this very hadith he forbade Zayd from touching an idol (and he himself never touched an idol, neither before prophethood nor after)? Would he forbid touching it and yet approve of slaughtering for it? This is impossible.
General principle: The second explanation is that he slaughtered for his provisions for the journey, and it happened by chance that the place was next to an idol where people used to slaughter; so their slaughter was for the idol, and his slaughter was for Allah, only the place was the same. As for what the apparent wording of the hadith implies (that he slaughtered for the idol), Allah forbid (we seek refuge in Allah from that)."
Important point / Research: Al-Dhahabi, after quoting these words of al-Harbi in "al-Siyar" 1/ 135, said: "This is a good explanation, for deeds are only by intentions. Zayd (bin 'Amr) judged by the outward, while inwardly it was for Allah. Perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not explain it out of fear of harm, for we know that he hated idols, but before prophethood he did not openly condemn them in front of Quraysh."
Important point / Research: Al-Harbi further said: "The narrations of Ibn 'Umar and Sa'id bin Zayd do not state that he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered or ordered it. Perhaps Zayd thought that this meat was what Quraysh used to slaughter for their idols, so he held back, although the matter was not as he thought. And if anything of the sort was done, it was done without his command or approval." Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Siyar" 1/ 130: Ibrahim al-Harbi narrated with his chain from Nufayl > his father > his grandfather that Zayd passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Ibn Harithah while they were eating, and they invited him, so Zayd said: I do not eat what has been slaughtered on the idols. The narrator said: After that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was not seen eating what had been slaughtered on the idols. Al-Dhahabi said: This wording is excellent and explains what preceded it. al-Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him) was always protected and guarded, before revelation and after it. Even if the permissibility (of eating the slaughter of the Jahiliyyah) were a possibility, we know that before revelation he used to eat from the slaughtered animals of Quraysh, and this was on the basis of permissibility; their slaughtered animals were only described as unlawful after the verse was revealed, just as wine remained lawful until it was forbidden in Madinah after Uhud. What is beyond doubt is that he (peace and blessings be upon him), even before revelation and before the Law was legislated, was absolutely protected from fornication, betrayal, treachery, lying, intoxication, prostrating to an idol, seeking decisions by divining arrows, vile conduct, foolishness, foul speech and uncovering the private parts. He did not perform tawaf naked, nor did he stand at Muzdalifah (as Quraysh did) but he stood at 'Arafah. In any case, even if something of that sort had appeared from him, there would have been no sin upon him because he did not know, but the rank of perfection refuses that anything of the sort should have occurred from him.
Important point / Research: We say: This last sentence, which al-Dhahabi mentioned is found with Ibrahim al-Harbi (i.e. his words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not seen after that", to the end), has dropped out of the printed edition of "Gharib al-Hadith" that we have, so it is to be supplied from al-Dhahabi's "al-Siyar".
Details of the narration: As for the statement at its end: "He will come on the Day of Resurrection alone (as a nation by himself)", this will come shortly from the hadith of Sa'id bin Zayd at number (5968), and it is "sahih" by virtue of its collective supporting reports. See it there.
