It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ja'far, Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with them) gathered in one place. Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am the most beloved of you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am the most beloved of you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." And Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am the most beloved of you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then they said (to one another): "Come, let us go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (so that we may ask him himself)." (Usamah said:) I went out, then came back and said: "Here are Ja'far, Ali and Zayd bin Harithah asking permission to enter." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give them permission." So they entered and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you to ask who is the most beloved of people to you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fatimah." They said: "We are asking you about the men." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (addressing each of them in turn): "O Ja'far! As for you, your physical form and your character and habits resemble mine, and you are part of me and a branch of my own tree. And O Ali! You are my brother and the father of my children (that is, the father of Hasan and Husayn); you are from me and I have a deep bond with you. And O Zayd! You are my freed slave; you are from me and I have a deep bond with you, and you are the most beloved to me of all these people."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak. Muhammad bin Ishaq is a mudallis and he has narrated with "'an'anah" (narrating using "from"). Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in the Musnad 36/ (21777) from Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Malik, and al-Nasa'i (8470) from Ahmad bin Bakkar al-Harrani, both of them from Muhammad bin Salamah, with this same chain; however, al-Nasa'i's narration is abridged. Reference / Source: al-Tirmidhi (3819) narrated it via 'Umar bin Abi Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman > his father > Usamah bin Zayd, and graded it hasan: "I was sitting when 'Ali and al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) came asking permission, and they said: O Usamah! Ask permission for us from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." And in it: "Then they said: O Messenger of Allah! We have come to ask you who among your family is most beloved to you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fatimah bint Muhammad. They said: We have not come to ask you about your family (blood relatives). He said: The most beloved of my family to me is the one whom Allah has favoured and whom I have favoured, Usamah bin Zayd. They asked: Then who? He said: Then 'Ali bin Abi Talib." Grading: This chain is weak; 'Umar bin Abi Salamah is weak when he narrates alone or contradicts others, and here he has been contradicted. Important point / Research: What is correct about the dispute among these three ('Ali, Ja'far and Zayd) is that it concerned the guardianship of the daughter of Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), as has passed at numbers (4664) and (5003) from the hadith of 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and its origin is in al-Bukhari (2669) and (4251) from the hadith of al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him).
