It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of the commanders of the expeditions is Zayd bin Harithah; he is the most equitable of them in dividing (the spoils) and the most just of them towards his subjects."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (1) Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak). Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi) is alone in it, and there is well-known criticism of him; what he alone narrates is not relied upon. Al-Waqidi narrated much from his shaykh "'A'idh bin Yahya", but he is "majhul" (it is not known who he is), and Abu al-Huwayrith ('Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'awiyah al-Zuraqi) is disputed.
