Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5019

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) with any army, he always appointed him as its commander, and had he lived on after him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have appointed him as his successor (khalifah).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "hasan" if al-Bahi's hearing from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is established. The present chain is "da'if" because of Sahl bin 'Ammar al-'Ataki, since there is disagreement about his reliability ('adalah), as al-Hakim said, but he has been corroborated.
Technical note / Hearing (sama'): There is disagreement over whether al-Bahi (whose name is 'Abdullah) heard from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). His explicit statement of hearing from her occurs in one hadith, and for this reason al-Bukhari asserted with certainty that he heard from 'A'ishah [as cited by al-Tirmidhi at the end of al-'Ilal al-Kabir]. Muslim also included in his Sahih one hadith (2536) that he narrated from 'A'ishah. However, Imam Ahmad and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi denied that he heard from her. Al-Daraqutni objected to Muslim in "al-Tatabbu'", and al-Qadi 'Iyad answered him in "Ikmal al-Mu'lim" that the hadith scholars have declared his narration from 'A'ishah and Fatimah bint Qays sound. Ibn Kathir called the chain of this hadith "jayyid" (good) in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah": 6/ 449, and said: "It is very gharib".
Reference / Source: It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad: 43/ (25898) and (26174), and by al-Nasa'i (8126) through the route of Ahmad bin Sulayman al-Ruhawi; both (Ahmad bin Hanbal and Ahmad bin Sulayman) from Muhammad bin 'Ubayd, with this same chain. Ahmad (26410) also recorded it from Sa'd bin Muhammad al-Warraq > Wa'il bin Dawud.
Details of the narration: This narration will come shortly with the author under number (5028) through the route of Masruq > 'A'ishah, but without mentioning "istikhlaf" (the appointment of a successor), and its chain is "sahih".
