Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5010

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we were with Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) at the Battle of Mu'tah. We found him among the martyrs, and (we saw that) there were more than seventy (wounds) on his body.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts this name was corrupted into "'Abdullah" (the full form, mukabbar), whereas this is the narration of "'Ubaydullah" (the diminutive form, musaghghar), as several narrators narrated it from Isma'il bin Aban, and as several also narrated it from Abu Uways; the two ('Abdullah and 'Ubaydullah) are brothers, but what is preserved is that the narration belongs to 'Ubaydullah.

Grading: (2) This report is "sahih"; a group narrated it from Nafi', but no one narrated it from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar (al-'Umari) except Abu Uways ('Abdullah bin 'Abdullah bin Uways), and Abu Uways is weak but can be considered (for corroboration). For this reason Abu Hatim said [in "al-'Ilal": (995)]: "This is munkar as a hadith of 'Ubaydullah".
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah recorded it in "al-Musannaf": 4/ 521, Abu 'Awanah in "al-Mustakhraj": (7544), and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (1438) and "al-Hilyah": 1/ 117, from Abu Ishaq al-Azdi Isma'il bin Aban > Abu Uways > 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar; but in the printed edition of "al-Hilyah" 'Ubaydullah was corrupted into "'Abdullah".
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat": 4/ 35 from Isma'il bin Abi Uways > his father > 'Abdullah bin 'Umar.
Note / Clarification: Here too the name appears in the full form ('Abdullah), which appears to be a corruption.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (4261) and Ibn Hibban (4741) recorded it through the route of 'Abdullah bin Sa'id bin Abi Hind, and al-Bukhari (4260) through the route of Sa'id bin Abi Hilal; both from Nafi', with this same chain.
