Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4976

Talhah bin Khirash narrates from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Indeed, Allah Almighty does not speak to anyone except from behind a veil, but He spoke to your father face to face and said: 'Wish for something from Me,'" and then he mentioned the full hadith.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan" because of Talhah bin Khirash and Musa bin Ibrahim bin Kathir, and these two are alone in mentioning that Allah the Exalted spoke to Jabir's (may Allah be pleased with him) father face to face (kifahan).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (190) and al-Tirmidhi (3010) recorded it from Yahya bin Habib, with this same chain, and al-Tirmidhi said: "It is hasan gharib".
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (190) and (2800) recorded it from Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami, from Musa bin Ibrahim bin Kathir, with this same chain. Al-Tirmidhi mentioned that 'Ali bin al-Madini also narrated it in the same way from Musa bin Ibrahim.
Reference / Source: It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad: 23/ (14881) with similar wording, through the route of 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil > Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: And its chain is "hasan" as corroboration and supporting evidence.
Details of the narration: It has passed within a lengthy hadith under number (2589), but it does not mention "kifahan" (speaking face to face).
Technical note / Language: "Kifahan" means face to face (without a veil), with no screen or messenger between the two.
