Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4963

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that Abdullah bin Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, I adjure You that tomorrow I meet the enemy, that they kill me, then rip open my belly and cut off my nose and ears, then You ask me: 'For what was all this?' and I answer: 'For Your sake.'" Sa'id bin al-Musayyib says: I hope that Allah Almighty will fulfil the last part of his oath just as He fulfilled the first part.
Were it not for the irsal (missing Companion link) in it, this hadith would be sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", although this present chain is one in which the mention of Yahya bin Sa'id (al-Ansari) is not preserved (mahfuz); rather, what is preserved is that it is the narration of "'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab", as will be explained.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin Zayd is da'if al-hadith, and moreover this narration is "mursal". In some routes ('Ali bin Zayd from Ibn al-Musayyab) it comes that "a man heard 'Abd Allah bin Jahsh", and the final statement is made the words of that man, not of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab. So what appears is that this is the same man who narrated the hadith to Ibn al-Musayyab, and 'Ali bin Zayd was inconsistent (idtirab) in it.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/249-250 from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Also, 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak in "al-Jihad": (85), and via him Abu Musa al-Madini in "al-Lata'if": (272) and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah": 3/91; and 'Abd al-Razzaq in "al-Musannaf": (85); and Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'": 1/109 via al-Hasan bin al-Sabbah al-Bazzar; these three (Ibn al-Mubarak, 'Abd al-Razzaq and al-Hasan) narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat": 3/85, and via him al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf": 11/191 and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Thabat": pp. 104-105, via Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, that "a man heard 'Abd Allah bin Jahsh say …", and attributed the final statement to that same man.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its supporting report (shahid) is the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), which has passed with the author at no. (2440), and its chain is "sahih".
Note / Clarification: (1) The manuscripts have "'aqd" (as does al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan": 6/363), whereas we have established the correct text from "the Mahmudiyyah manuscript" (al-Mayman edition).
