Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word was distorted into "al-Misri", whereas the correct form is "al-Basri", and he is Abu Muslim al-Kajji.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "wahin" (extremely weak) on account of Kathir al-Nawwa', as al-Dhahabi said in the "Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also disagreement from Kathir al-Nawwa' about the chain of this report, as al-Daraqutni explained in "al-'Ilal": (395), and the explanation of that will come shortly.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi: (3785) narrated it from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar al-'Adani, from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from Kathir al-Nawwa', from Abu Idris, from al-Musayyab bin Najabah, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note: Al-Tirmidhi added a man, "Abu Idris", in the chain between Kathir and al-Musayyab; he is al-Hamdani al-Murhibi.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is hasan gharib through this route, and this hadith has also been narrated from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as mawquf."
Important point: We say: al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir": 6/(6047) via Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani and Kathir bin Yahya, the companion of al-Basri, both from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this chain, as "mawquf".
Reference / Source: Musnad Ahmad narrated it at 2/(665) via Isma'il bin Zakariyya al-Khulqani, and at (1263) via Fitr bin Khalifah, both from Kathir al-Nawwa', from 'Abd Allah bin Mulayl, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), as "marfu'".
Technical note: Here they mentioned "'Abd Allah bin Mulayl" in place of al-Musayyab bin Najabah.
Reference / Source: Some narrators narrated it from Kathir al-Nawwa', from 'Abd Allah bin Mulayl, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as "mawquf": thus 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah": (274), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (4492) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah": (455) via 'Ali bin Hashim bin al-Barid; and al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad": 14/511 and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq": 10/452 and 43/384-385 via Ja'far bin Ziyad al-Ahmar. Both narrated it from Kathir al-Nawwa' > 'Abd Allah bin Mulayl > 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as "mawquf".
Reference / Source: Musnad Ahmad narrated it at 2/(1206) from 'Abd al-Razzaq, and at (1274) from Mu'awiyah bin Hisham, both from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Salim bin Abi Hafsah. 'Abd al-Razzaq said: "from 'Abd Allah bin Mulayl" (without an intermediary), and Mu'awiyah bin Hisham said: "It reached me from 'Abd Allah bin Mulayl."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is a corroboration of Kathir al-Nawwa', but there is disagreement in narrating it from Salim bin Abi Hafsah, as you have seen. The more correct is the narration of "Mu'awiyah bin Hisham", with which Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi agreed in al-Tahawi's "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar": 7/198. This shows that Salim did not hear this narration from 'Abd Allah bin Mulayl, but heard it from some unnamed person. Al-Tahawi considered it possible that this unnamed person is "Kathir al-Nawwa'" himself. If that is correct, the hadith comes back round to "Kathir"; otherwise this man remains unnamed. Moreover, Salim himself is a "layyin" (weak) narrator, so this corroboration carries no weight.
