It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: On the day of the Battle of Uhud, when the people returned from the fighting, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) found Hamzah missing. The narrator says: A man said: "I saw him by that tree, saying: 'I am the lion of Allah and the lion of His Messenger. O Allah, I declare before You my disavowal of what these have brought, meaning Abu Sufyan and his companions, and I apologise to You for what these (Muslims) have done and for their flight.'" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards him, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his forehead he wept, and when he saw his mutilation (his cut limbs) he (peace and blessings be upon him) sobbed aloud. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there no shroud for him?" A man of the Ansar then threw a cloth over him. Jabir says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the chief of all the martyrs in the sight of Allah Almighty will be Hamzah."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (1) Its chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of Abu Hammad al-Hanafi (al-Mughaffal bin Sadaqah) and 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, they were corroborated in some of the wordings of the hadith, as explained at no. (2589); there this hadith came via 'Uthman bin Sa'id al-Darimi, from Mahbub bin Musa, and he (Mahbub) is "Abu Salih al-Farra'" himself.
