Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4950

It is narrated from a man of Madinah that he said: My grandfather brought my father to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "This is my son; what shall I name him?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Name him after the person who is the most beloved of all people to me: Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib."
This unknown narrator fell short in narrating the hadith from Ibn Uyaynah, and the correct report in this matter is that of Ya'qub bin Humayd. Abu Ahmad al-Hafiz used to debate with me, holding that Bukhari narrated from him in his al-Jami' al-Sahih, while I used to deny it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), but this narration is "mursal".
Technical note / Criticism and accreditation (al-jarh wa al-ta'dil): The author (al-Hakim) erred in declaring Yusuf bin Salman al-Mazini "majhul", whereas he is
Technical note (continued): "jayyid al-hadith" (good in hadith); a group of the great hadith masters narrated from him, Imam al-Nasa'i said of him "la ba'sa bihi", Maslamah bin Qasim declared him thiqah, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Although some connected (wasl) this narration, that is not sound, as has been explained under
Note / Clarification: the preceding hadith.

Technical note / Narrator identification: (2) The author's view was that the "Ya'qub" from whom al-Bukhari narrated and whom he left unspecified (muhmal) in two places is "Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri", as has passed after hadith (3143). And Abu Ahmad al-Hafiz (mentioned in the chain) is the one known as "al-Hakim al-Kabir", the author of the book "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'". See his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'": 16/370.
