Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak as a "mawsul" (connected) narration. Ya'qub bin Humayd bin Kasib is alone in connecting it with the mention of Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), as al-Daraqutni pointed out in "al-Ghara'ib wa al-Afrad" [see al-Maqdisi's Atraf: 1592] and in "al-'Ilal": (3250).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The hadith of Ya'qub bin Humayd bin Kasib is "hasan" except when he is alone or contradicts others, and here he is alone in connecting it, and narrators more trustworthy and more eminent than him contradicted him. They narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from 'Amr bin Dinar, from "a man of the Ansar" who said: "My grandfather brought my father to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)", and so they mentioned it as "mursal", and this is closer to being correct (ashbah bi al-sawab). Some unreliable narrators also connected it, making it the narration of this same Ansari man from his father.
Reference / Source: Al-Ajurri narrated it in "al-Shari'ah": (1723) from Abu Muhammad 'Abd Allah bin Salih al-Bukhari with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (1827) via 'Abd Allah bin Ishaq al-Mada'ini, from Ya'qub bin Humayd bin Kasib, with this chain.
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Wahb narrated it in "al-Jami'": (81 - Abu al-Khayr) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from 'Amr bin Dinar (in the printed edition the name Dinar is distorted into "Kathir"), who said: I heard a man in Madinah say: "My grandfather brought my father to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) …", and so he mentioned it "mursal".
Details of the narration: Likewise, Yusuf bin Salman al-Mazini narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah as "mursal", as comes with the author in the next narration.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Shaykh al-Asbahani narrated it in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Asbahan": (291), Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (1826), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad": 2/514 and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq": 52/4-5, via Qays bin al-Rabi', from Shu'bah, from 'Amr bin Dinar, from an Ansari man, from his father, who said: "A boy was born to me", and so he mentioned it as "mawsul".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Qays bin al-Rabi' (the narrator) is not strong, and he is alone in narrating it from Shu'bah. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi says: "It is gharib as a hadith of Shu'bah; 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Khattab is alone in narrating it from Qays bin al-Rabi'."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another report is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named the son of an Ansari man "'Abd al-Rahman". It is in Musnad Ahmad: 22/(14296), Sahih al-Bukhari: (6186) and (6189) and Sahih Muslim: (2133) via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and in Sahih Muslim: (2133) via Rawh bin al-Qasim, both from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), that: "A boy was born to a man among us and he named him al-Qasim. We said: We will not give you the kunyah Abu al-Qasim, nor will we delight your eye (by it). He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned that to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Name your son 'Abd al-Rahman."
Important point: We say: this is the authentic (sahih) narration from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him).
