Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 495

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق الصَّغَاني، حدثنا سُرَيج بن النُّعمان، حدثنا حماد بن سَلَمة، عن أبي التَّيّاح، عن موسى بن سَلَمة، عن ابن عباس قال: سُئِلَ النبيُّ ﷺ عن ماء البحر، فقال: "ماءُ البحرِ طَهُورٌ" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، وشواهده كثيرة، ولم يُخرجاه، فأوَّلُ شواهده:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about sea water, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sea water is pure (and purifying)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, and its supporting reports are many, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Tayyah refers to Yazid bin Humayd al-Duba'i.
وأخرجه أحمد 4/ (2518) في آخر حديث طويل عن عفان بن مسلم، عن حماد بن سلمة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it at 4/ (2518), at the end of a long hadith, with the chain 'Affan bin Muslim from Hammad bin Salamah.
