Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscripts (S), (M) and ('A) this name was distorted into "al-Laythi"; it has been corrected from manuscripts (Z) and (B) and "Talkhis al-Dhahabi". The same correct name is also in "Musnad al-Hasan bin Sufyan" [as cited in "Ithaf al-Sadah al-Muttaqin": 10/505], but there his father's name is given as "Husayn" (Ahmad bin Husayn al-Lahabi al-Madini). Perhaps 'Abd Allah is the name of one of his forefathers, or it is a mistake of 'Abd al-Malik al-Raqashi, since he made some errors while he lived in Baghdad, and Ibn al-Sammak, who narrates from him here, is also a Baghdadi. And Allah knows best.
Technical note / Narrator identification: If the narration of al-Hasan bin Sufyan is preserved, then "al-Lahabi" is an attribution to Abu Lahab bin 'Abd al-Muttalib, as in al-'Ayni's "Maghani al-Akhyar": 1/28, and he reported from al-Hafiz Abu Bakr al-Jarudi al-Naysaburi that he declared him thiqah.
Note / Clarification: (1) In our manuscripts this word was distorted into "sa'ban", and in manuscript (S) "qa'ban" is written above it as a correction. The word does not occur in the printed edition; instead it has the words "fa-qarrabtu ilayhi haysan" (so I brought him a date-and-butter sweet).
Technical note / Lexicon: "Qa'b" is a deep round wooden bowl from which one drinks.
Note / Clarification: (2) In manuscript (Z) this word was distorted into "d s", and it dropped out of manuscripts (S) and (M), although there was a reference mark to the margin there, but nothing was written in the margin. It seems the copyist of the source manuscript intended to write it in the margin but forgot, or the word was not clear in the source manuscript, so in (S) and (M) only a mark was placed to indicate that there was an additional word here in the source.
Grading: (3) Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak) on account of Haram bin 'Uthman, since he is "matruk al-hadith". This is why al-Dhahabi, in his "Talkhis", objecting to the author's (al-Hakim's) authentication of the hadith, said: "Where is the authenticity, when Haram (bin 'Uthman) is in it?!"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: some mistakes have also occurred in this chain: 'Abd al-Rahman is called "al-Agharr" whereas he is "al-A'raj", and his shaykh is named "Abu Salamah" whereas he is "al-Miswar bin Makhramah". Perhaps these mistakes are among the errors of 'Abd al-Malik al-Raqashi, as mentioned earlier.
Details of the narration: This hadith was narrated by the precise hafiz al-Hasan bin Sufyan in his "Musnad" [as in "Ithaf al-Sadah al-Muttaqin": 10/505] from Ahmad bin Husayn al-Lahabi al-Madini, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad, from Haram bin 'Uthman, from 'Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj, from al-Miswar bin Makhramah, from Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him). In it he added these words describing (the pool of) al-Kawthar: "And its courtyard (edge) is of rubies, coral, chrysolite and pearls."
Reference / Source: Likewise, Baqi bin Makhlad narrated it in "al-Hawd wa al-Kawthar": (42) from Yahya bin 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani, and al-Bazzar in "Musnad al-Bazzar": (1289) from one of the shaykhs of Basrah, both from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, from Haram bin 'Uthman, from 'Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj, from al-Miswar bin Makhramah, from Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: In his narration, Baqi added to the description of al-Kawthar the like of what is in the narration of al-Hasan bin Sufyan, and further said: "And it is (in extent) like what lies between Aylah and San'a'."
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in "Tafsir al-Tabari": 3/325, al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir": (2960) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (1831) via Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Abi Kathir (Haram bin 'Uthman > 'Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj > Usamah bin Zayd); thus they dropped from the chain the intermediary (al-Miswar) between al-A'raj and Usamah. Also, Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i narrated it in "al-Ghaylaniyyat": (258) from Ibn Najiyah, from Ka'b Abi 'Abd Allah al-Dhirra', from Yahya al-Himmani, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad (Haram > al-A'raj > al-Miswar > Usamah bin Zayd), from "the wife of Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib", from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Thus he made it part of the Musnad of the wife of Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir": 24/588 via Zayd bin al-Hubab, from 'Isa bin al-Nu'man (a descendant of Rafi' bin Khadij), from Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah bin Rafi' bin Khadij, from Khawlah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), who was married to Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, and I made "khazirah" (a dish of meat and flour) for him and served it. He put his hand in it, felt its heat and withdrew it, then said: "O Khawlah, we cannot bear heat or cold. O Khawlah, Allah has given me al-Kawthar, which is a river in Paradise, and no creature is dearer to me than those of your people who come to it."
Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The full wording in the description of the Pool, as with Baqi bin Makhlad and al-Tabarani, is supported by the hadith of Sayyiduna 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Tabarani's "Musnad al-Shamiyyin": (95), except that it has the words "its width is between Aylah and 'Adan".
Grading: And its chain is "hasan". See also the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that will come with the author at no. (6441).
Important point / Research: Ibn Kathir, after narrating this hadith with al-Tabari's chain in his "Tafsir", said: "Haram bin 'Uthman is weak, but this is a good (hasan) wording; the basis of this hadith is authentically established, indeed it is mutawatir according to many of the imams of hadith, through routes that yield certainty."
