Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4946

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was martyred (at the Battle of Uhud) while he was in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels have washed him."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is "talif" (ruined, extremely weak) on account of Mu'alla bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Wasiti, who is "halik" (a ruined narrator), as al-Dhahabi said in the "Talkhis"; indeed, some accused him of fabricating hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir": (12094) and al-Bayhaqi in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan": (7460) via Sharik al-Nakha'i from al-Hajjaj bin Artah, and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra": 4/15 via Abu Shaybah Ibrahim bin 'Uthman al-Wasiti (both from al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah, from Miqsam, from Ibn 'Abbas), that "Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib and Hanzalah bin al-Rahib were killed on the day of Uhud while in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw the angels washing them both."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both these chains are weak: Sharik is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory), al-Hajjaj is a "mudallis" and narrated with 'an ('an'anah), and in the second chain Abu Shaybah is a "matruk" narrator of no value. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari": 4/714: "This narration is gharib in its mention of Hamzah."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a "mursal" narration from al-Hasan al-Basri in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat": 3/14, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw the angels washing Hamzah."
Technical note: Its narrators up to al-Hasan al-Basri are thiqah, but the experts of the discipline (the hadith scholars) do not consider the mursal narrations of al-Hasan al-Basri reliable.
Important point / Research: The preserved (mahfuz, correct) position is that "Ghasil al-Mala'ikah" (the one washed by the angels) is only Hanzalah bin Abi 'Amir al-Rahib (may Allah be pleased with him), as will come at no. (4979).
