It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was fighting in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) like a shield on the day of the Battle of Uhud, and saying: "I am the lion of Allah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: (1) Its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), but there is disagreement over whether it is mawsul (connected) or mursal. In reporting it as "mawsul", Muhammad bin Shadhan al-Jawhari or someone below him is alone. Details of the narration: Whereas Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal [as in the Masa'il of his son Salih: (866)] narrated it from Mu'awiyah bin 'Amr (al-Azdi), from Abu Ishaq al-Fazari (Ibrahim bin Muhammad), from Ibn 'Awn ('Abd Allah bin 'Awn), from 'Umayr bin Ishaq, "mursal". Important point / Research: Likewise a group narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin 'Awn as "mursal", as explained at no. (4936); so the more likely position (ashbah) is that it is "mursal". And Allah the Exalted knows best. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/2430 from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. (4959). Note / Clarification: For further detail, see the next narration and the one that will come at no. (4959).
