Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4908

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was commanded to give Khadijah the glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of qasab (pearls), in which there will be no clamour and no fatigue or hardship."

Grading: This hadith is "sahih". This chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Ishaq (al-Muttalibi, author of the Sirah); he is "saduq" and he explicitly stated that he heard it. He was corroborated by 'Ubayd Allah and Muhammad (both sons of al-Mundhir bin al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam), to whose narration al-Daraqutni alluded in "al-'Ilal" (312, 3512).
Technical note: However, those two made it a narration of 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far (Ibn Abi Talib) from "'Ali bin Abi Talib", and this is closer to being correct because 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far is one of the junior Companions. In any case this disagreement does no harm, because at most it would be a "mursal of a Companion" by 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far (which is accepted). Muhammad bin al-Mundhir is "strong in hadith"; al-Daraqutni and Abu Ahmad al-Hakim said of him "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him and his brother 'Ubayd Allah in "al-Thiqat".
Critique: Al-Daraqutni stated decisively that Muhammad and his brother 'Ubayd Allah were "gharib" (alone) in this hadith, but had al-Daraqutni kept in mind the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq corroborating them, he would not have stated that decisively, and Allah knows best.
Preference (tarjih): On the basis of his view, al-Daraqutni preferred the narration of this report by a group of trustworthy narrators from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah (which will come under number 4914). But once we learned that the two sons of al-Mundhir bin al-Zubayr were not alone in narrating it from Hisham, and that Muhammad bin Ishaq corroborated them, this requires that "both narrations are preserved (mahfuz)". This is especially so since 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrated widely, so it is not unlikely that he heard this report from more than one person.
Supporting reports (shawahid): Its soundness is also supported by the fact that al-Zuhri narrated this report from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr "mursal", as cited by Ma'mar bin Rashid in "al-Jami'" (20920), Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1574), al-Dulabi in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (34, 35), Abu 'Awanah in "al-Sahih" (229), Ibn Mandah in "al-Iman" (682) and others. It is as though 'Urwah, having narrated it from several people, intended brevity here and narrated it "mursal", and Allah knows best.
