Grading of the chain: This chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of 'Asim bin 'Ubaydullah (who is Ibn 'Asim bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab). Nevertheless al-Tirmidhi declared it sahih, and 'Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili remained silent about it (thereby treating it as sahih), for which Ibn al-Qattan criticised him in "Bayan al-Wahm" (4/ 594).
Correction of the text: What is mahfuz (preserved) in this report (despite its weakness) is the mention of "al-Hasan bin 'Ali", not "al-Husayn" (as in the author's narration, which led him to cite it among the virtues of al-Husayn). Sufyan is "Ibn Sa'id al-Thawri".
Reference / Sources: Ahmad (45/ 27186) narrated it from Waki'; Ahmad (39/ 23869, 45/ 27194), Abu Dawud (5105) and al-Tirmidhi (1514) by way of Yahya al-Qattan; and Ahmad (39/ 23869) and al-Tirmidhi (1514) by way of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi. All three of them narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: "hasan sahih".
Note: All of them mentioned in their narration "al-Hasan bin 'Ali" in place of (his brother) al-Husayn.
Supporting reports: It has two supporting reports, but they are not worth any regard; see them in "Musnad Ahmad" (23869).
