Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 488

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that we used to pray with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and would not perform ablution on account of walking along the way (our feet stepping on something).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan refers to Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and Abu Wa'il refers to Shaqiq bin Salamah.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abu Dawud (204) through Abu Mu'awiyah, Sharik, Jarir and 'Abd Allah bin Idris, and by Ibn Majah (1041) through 'Abd Allah bin Idris; all four narrate it from al-A'mash with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Its wording is: "We did not perform wudu' on account of what is trodden upon (maw'ti'), nor did we gather up (in prayer) our hair or garments." In Ibn Majah the wording is: "We were commanded not to perform wudu'." Further detail will come at hadith number (619).
Note / Clarification: Regarding "do not perform wudu' on account of what is trodden upon (maw'ti')", Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah": it means the filth that is trodden upon in the road; the intended meaning is that wudu' is not broken by it (there is no need to repeat wudu'), not that they would not even wash it.
