Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading of the chain: This chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of Muhammad bin Mus'ab (al-Qarqasani) and because of its "inqita'" (break).
Defect: For Abu 'Ammar Shaddad bin 'Abdullah did not live in the time of Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith, as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis". Umm al-Fadl is "Lubabah", the wife of al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib and the mother of his children. Umm al-Fadl died during the caliphate of 'Uthman, and he himself led her funeral prayer, whereas Shaddad heard only from those Companions who died later.
Verification of the text: However, the story of Umm al-Fadl's dream in the first part of this hadith is also narrated from her through other chains, some of which have sahih chains. So the first part (the dream) is sahih as the hadith of Umm al-Fadl. As for the second part (the killing of al-Husayn), Muhammad bin Mus'ab is "alone" in mentioning Umm al-Fadl in it. Others differed with him and did not mention this (second) story at all in the hadith of Umm al-Fadl. This (second) story is narrated through other chains with mention of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and that is closer to being correct, as will come later. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 468-469), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (14/ 196-197), from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Sources: Al-Shajari narrated it in "al-Amali" (1/ 188) by way of Akhi Karujah, and Ibn 'Asakir (14/ 196) by way of Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Saminah. Both of them narrate it from Muhammad bin Mus'ab, with this chain. It will come with the author (al-Hakim) below at number (4884) by way of Ibn Abi Saminah, but abridged to the first part only.
Reference (first part): The first story in it, about Umm al-Fadl's dream, was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (25/ 42) from Abu Zayd Ahmad bin Yazid al-Hawti, and in "al-Du'a'" (1975) from Muhammad bin Sahl bin al-Muhajir al-Raqqi; both of them narrate it from Muhammad bin Mus'ab, with this chain.
Reference / Sources: This story was also narrated by Ahmad (44/ 26878), and through his route Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Tahqiq fi Masa'il al-Khilaf" (88), via 'Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal, from Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith, and its chain is "sahih". In it Umm al-Fadl suckled al-Husayn with the milk of her son Qutham bin al-'Abbas.
Correction of the text: In most manuscripts of "Musnad Ahmad" "al-Hasan" is mentioned in place of al-Husayn, whereas it is certainly "al-Husayn", as found in one of its carefully prepared manuscripts. Likewise in Ibn al-Jawzi's "al-Tanqih", through the route of the "Musnad" itself, al-Husayn is mentioned. And this is what appears in most routes of this hadith. Moreover, most biographers and historians mentioned this story in the biography of al-Husayn, such as Ibn Sa'd ("al-Tabaqat" 6/ 400), Mus'ab al-Zubayri ("Nasab Quraysh" p. 24), Ibn 'Asakir ("Tarikh Dimashq" 14/ 114), Ibn al-'Adim ("Tarikh Halab" 6/ 2566) and al-Mizzi ("Tahdhib al-Kamal" 6/ 398). Al-Dhahabi indicated in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (3/ 440), in the biography of Qutham bin al-'Abbas, that Qutham was the foster-brother of al-Husayn bin 'Ali. Ibn Kathir also mentioned the story in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (9/ 238) in the chapter on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) foretelling the killing of al-Husayn bin 'Ali.
Technical note (misunderstanding): However, some of those who wrote biographies of al-Hasan bin 'Ali mentioned this story in his biography, based on an error that occurred in some narrations they had. Among those who mentioned it in the biography of al-Hasan are al-Tabarani (3/ 2541), Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan", Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (1/ 488), al-Nawawi in "Tahdhib al-Asma' wa al-Lughat", Mughaltay in "Ikmal Tahdhib al-Kamal" and al-Salihi in "Subul al-Huda wa al-Rashad" (known as al-Sirah al-Shamiyyah, 11/ 64).
Reference / Variation in the chain: The first story was also narrated by Ahmad (44/ 26875) by way of Isra'il bin Yunus al-Sabi'i, and Ibn Majah (3923) by way of 'Ali bin Salih bin Salih bin Hayy. Both of them narrate it from Simak bin Harb, from Qabus bin Abi al-Mukhariq. Isra'il said: "from Umm al-Fadl", whereas 'Ali bin Salih, narrating from Qabus, said: Umm al-Fadl said: "O Messenger of Allah," and so mentioned it in "mursal" form. Some narrate it from Qabus, from his father, from Umm al-Fadl, and some narrate it from Simak that "Umm al-Fadl" (in mursal form). Al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (4100) judged correct the narration of those who narrated it as (Qabus, from Umm al-Fadl). If that is correct, the chain is "hasan".
Correction: In most manuscripts of "Musnad Ahmad" here too "al-Hasan" appears in place of al-Husayn, which is an error; in some manuscripts the correct name appears, and all the other narrations support it.
The second story: As for the second story, in which the angel informs the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the killing of al-Husayn and shows him red soil from his soil, it is narrated from "Umm Salamah" (may Allah be pleased with her), not from Umm al-Fadl. It will come with the author below at number (8402) with a weak chain, but the report has routes which, taken together, can raise it to "hasan".
Supporting reports: With mention of Umm Salamah, it is supported (a shahid) by the hadith of Anas bin Malik, which is in the Musnad of Ahmad (21/ 13539, 13794) and Ibn Hibban (6742). Its chain has some "lin" (weakness).
Supporting reports: It is also supported by the hadith of Abu Umamah, which is in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (8096), and through his route in Ibn 'Asakir (14/ 190-191). Its chain includes a narrator declared weak and one whose biography we did not find; nevertheless al-Dhahabi declared it "hasan" in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (3/ 289).
Supporting reports: It is also supported by the hadith of Abu al-Tufayl bin Wathilah, which is in al-Tabarani (as in al-Haythami's "Majma' al-Zawa'id" 9/ 190), and he declared its chain "hasan". We did not find its chain, so the responsibility for it lies with him (al-Haythami).
