Abu Ishaq said: Allegiance was given to Abu Muhammad Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Kufah immediately after the martyrdom of the Commander of the Believers (Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him), and he took the pledge of allegiance from his companions. Then Harithah bin Mudarrib narrated to me; he said: I heard Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: "By Allah, I will take your pledge only on the condition I tell you." They asked: What is that condition? He said: "You will make peace with whomever I make peace with and fight whomever I fight." Then when the pledge was complete, he addressed the people.

Grading of the chain: This chain is "sahih". Abu Ishaq is "'Amr bin 'Abdullah al-Sabi'i" and Shayban is "Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Nahwi". Reference / Sources: The statement of al-Hasan bin 'Ali from it was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (6/ 370) from 'Ubaydullah bin Musa, from Shayban, from Abu Ishaq, from Khalid bin Mudarrib, who said: I heard al-Hasan bin 'Ali, and he mentioned it. He mentioned "Khalid bin Mudarrib" in place of Harithah bin Mudarrib; the two are brothers, and both are among the senior Tabi'in. Ibn Sa'd (6/ 379) also narrated by way of Maymun bin Mihran al-Jazari, who said: "Al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib took two pledges from the people of Iraq after 'Ali: he took their pledge on leadership, and he took their pledge that they would enter into whatever he entered into and be content with whatever he was content with."
