Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4866

It is narrated from Zuhayr bin al-Aqmar that when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to address the people. A man from the tribe of Azd Shanu'ah stood up and said: I bear witness that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with him (Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him) seated in his lap, saying: "Whoever loves me, let him love this one too." And let the one who is present convey this to the one who is absent. Were it not for the honour and regard due to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would never have narrated this hadith.

Linguistic explanation: "Al-hibwah" (with kasrah or dammah on the undotted ha'): this is a noun from "ihtiba'", which means that a person draws his legs up to his belly and binds them to his back with a cloth, fastening it tightly (sitting with the knees drawn up). Sometimes this is done with the two hands instead of a cloth.
