Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" except for this phrase: "and their father is better than them".
Technical note: This chain is "hasan" because of 'Asim (bin Abi al-Najud). There has been disagreement over 'Asim regarding the name of the Companion; here he named 'Abd Allah (i.e. Ibn Mas'ud), whereas Abu al-Aswad 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Amir narrated it - in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (2608), Ibn Shahin's "al-Afrad" (89), al-Khatib's "Tarikh Baghdad" (11/ 498) and "al-Mutashabih" (2/ 752), and Ibn 'Asakir (34/ 447) - from 'Asim, from Zirr bin Hubaysh, from "Hudhayfah" (bin al-Yaman) (i.e. he named Hudhayfah in place of Ibn Mas'ud). Likewise al-Minhal bin 'Amr also narrated it from Zirr bin Hubaysh from Hudhayfah, as will come with the author under no. (5730), but he did not mention the words "wa abuhuma khayrun minhuma" (and their father is better than them) at the end.
Principle: This kind of disagreement does no harm, because wherever the hadith turns it ends up with a Companion, and all the Companions are "'udul" (of upright character). However, the mention of Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) seems more correct, because Imam al-Sha'bi also narrated this hadith from Hudhayfah, in Musnad Ahmad (38/ 23330) and elsewhere, and in it too the aforementioned addition is not present.
Corroborating reports: This hadith with the aforementioned addition (that the father is better) is narrated from the hadith of Qurrah bin Iyas al-Muzani in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (2617).
Defect ('illah): But its chain contains 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ziyad bin An'um (al-Ifriqi), who is "da'if" (weak), and there is also disagreement over him in the chain. Thus sometimes it is narrated from him via Muslim bin Yasar in "mursal" form, as Ibn Sa'd (6/ 363) recorded.
Corroborating reports: Likewise it is also narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), which will come after this, but its chain is "talif" (very weak / ruined).
Corroborating reports: It is also narrated from the hadith of Malik bin al-Huwayrith in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (19/ 650) and Ibn 'Adi (6/ 381).
Criticism and praise of narrators: Its chain contains his grandson "Malik bin al-Hasan bin Malik bin al-Huwayrith". Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and used him as proof in his "Sahih", but he is not well known, as al-Baghawi said in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" in the biography of 'Utbah al-Fazari. Al-'Uqayli said: "There is some doubt about him (fihi nazar)". Ibn 'Adi said: "I think the problem (bala') in it comes from Malik bin al-Hasan, because no one corroborates him on this hadith with this chain."
