It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us with Hasan on one of his shoulders and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the other. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would kiss this one at one moment and that one at another, until he reached us. A man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), do you love them both (so much)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever loves them both has certainly loved me, and whoever bears hatred toward them both has in truth borne hatred toward me."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading of the chain: Because of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mas'ud, this chain can possibly be graded hasan. Investigation of the narrator: This 'Abd al-Rahman is "al-Yashkuri", as Abu Hatim al-Razi attributed him (which his son transmitted in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 5/ 285), and Ibn Hibban also said the same in "al-Thiqat" (5/ 106). Both of them mentioned that Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Iyas narrated from him (and mentioned only him), and that he narrates from Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with them both). So he is a Tabi'i against whom no criticism is reported, and there are also supporting reports for his narration; therefore he can be graded hasan. 15/ (9673): Reference: This hadith of his is found in "Musnad Ahmad" (15/ 9673). Source / References: Its marfu' part was recorded by Imam Ahmad in (13/ 7876) and (15/ 9759), and by al-Nasa'i in (8112), via Abu al-Jahhaf Dawud bin Abi 'Awf, from Abu Hazim Salman al-Ashja'i, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Grading of the chain: Its chain is "qawi" (strong) because of Abu al-Jahhaf. Corroboration: Moreover, Salim bin Abi Hafsah corroborated him, as will come with the author under no. (4855), and Salim is "la ba'sa bihi" (no harm in him), as Ahmad and Ibn 'Adi said. This narration will come with the author under no. (4881) via Abu al-Jahhaf from Abu Hazim from Abu Hurayrah, concerning al-Husayn bin 'Ali alone. Lexical explanation: The word "يَلْثَم" means: he kisses.
