Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4825

It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "I and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washed Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Clarification of the chain: In the manuscripts (Mss) available to us this chain is like this, i.e. ('Awn from 'Umarah) without the conjunctive waw, which would mean that 'Awn bin Muhammad bin 'Ali heard this narration through 'Umarah bin Muhajir as an intermediary. And in Imam al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (3/ 397) and "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (7359), via Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim, it is narrated the same way, so al-Hakim's narration is indeed like this. But according to the principles of narration this is not correct.
Important point (correction): In this chain the correct wording should be "wa 'an" (with the conjunctive waw), because both 'Awn bin Muhammad bin 'Ali and 'Umarah bin Muhajir heard from this lady (Umm Ja'far), who is the mother of 'Awn bin Muhammad bin 'Ali.
Reference / Evidence: The evidence for this is the narration of 'Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (1/ 109), where he narrated it from Harun bin Ma'ruf, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, from Muhammad bin Musa, from 'Awn bin Muhammad "and" (wa 'an) from 'Umarah bin Muhajir. Here the conjunction is with waw (i.e. each of them heard it separately). Moreover, a group of thiqah (trustworthy) narrators narrated this report from Muhammad bin Musa, from 'Awn bin Muhammad, from his mother Umm Ja'far, which supports the correctness of our statement, and Allah is the One who grants success.
Note: In the printed edition "وعمارة بن المهاجر" appears (with the waw but without the word "'an"), and this is clearer in context.

Technical note (variation in the text): In manuscripts (Z), (M) and (B) the words are "Umm Ja'far, the mother of Muhammad bin 'Ali", whereas the printed edition has "the wife of Muhammad bin 'Ali". What is recorded in manuscript (S) is most probably correct; however, what appears in the printed edition cannot be rejected either.
Details about the narrator: For this Umm Ja'far is in fact the wife of Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib (known as Ibn al-Hanafiyyah). Among the sons of Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib is one named Ja'far, as appears in the lineage of some narrators. So it is not unlikely that the son after whom she took the kunyah "Umm Ja'far" is this same Ja'far bin Muhammad bin 'Ali. This lady became well known by this kunyah (Umm Ja'far), although she was also given a kunyah after her son 'Awn bin Muhammad bin 'Ali (Umm 'Awn).

Grading: Its chain is "hasan", as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani said in "al-Talkhis al-Habir" (2/ 143).
Reference: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Tamhid" (1/ 381): This report is well known among the biographers (ahl al-siyar).
Identification of the narrator: Here Muhammad bin Musa is "Muhammad bin Musa bin Abi 'Abd Allah al-Fitri".

Technical note / Error (wahm): Some error (wahm) occurred in Ibn Shahin's chain and in al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's narration via him, which has been explained under no. (4819).
Details: The narration of some of them is "mursal" (disconnected).

Also 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in (6122). Both of them (i.e. Ibrahim bin Muhammad and 'Abd al-Razzaq) narrate it through 'Umarah bin Muhajir alone.
