Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4802

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hasan bin Hasan (bin Ali) sought his daughter's hand in marriage. Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) told him to meet him at the time of Isha. When they met, Miswar praised and glorified Allah and then said: To proceed: By Allah, no lineage, tie or relationship by marriage is more beloved to me than your lineage, tie and relationship by marriage. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fatimah is a piece of me; what distresses her distresses me, and what gladdens her gladdens me. And on the Day of Resurrection all ties will be severed except my lineage, my tie and my relationship by marriage." And you already have her daughter (the granddaughter of Sayyidah Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her) in your marriage; if I were to marry my daughter to you as well, that would distress her (Sayyidah Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her). So he went away accepting his excuse.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: (2) This text is as established in manuscripts (Z) and (B), whereas manuscripts (S) and (M) have "فليلقاني", "al-Talkhis" has "يلقاني", and the "Musnad" has "فليلقني".

Grading: (3) Because of Umm Bakr bint al-Miswar bin Makhramah, its chain can possibly be graded hasan (muhtamil li-l-tahsin). She is a Tabi'iyyah; she was narrated from by her brother's grandson 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far (who is Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Miswar bin Makhramah) and by Makhramah bin Bukayr bin al-Ashajj; she narrated a great deal from her father, and al-Bukhari narrated from her in "al-Adab al-Mufrad".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the mention of "'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rafi'" in this chain is a "wahm" (error) of Abu Sa'id, the mawla of Banu Hashim. Imam al-Bayhaqi says in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" [7/ 64]: "A group narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far without mentioning Ibn Abi Rafi' in its chain."
Important point: We say: Abu Musa al-Madini clarified this in "al-Lata'if min Daqa'iq al-Ma'arif" (927), where he narrated this report via Abu Sa'id the mawla of Banu Hashim and via 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd Allah al-Uwaysi, and distinguished between the narrations of Abu Sa'id the mawla of Banu Hashim and al-Uwaysi: Abu Sa'id the mawla of Banu Hashim said in his narration: "from 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far, from Umm Bakr bint al-Miswar and Ja'far bin Muhammad, from 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rafi', from al-Miswar", whereas 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Uwaysi said in his narration: "from 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far, from Umm Bakr, from her father; and (separately) from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rafi', from al-Miswar". (That is, al-Uwaysi did not mix up the chains.)
Reference / Source: And this hadith is in "Musnad Ahmad" [31/ (18907)].
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in his additions (ziyadat) to the "Musnad" (18930) from Muhammad bin 'Abbad al-Makki, from Abu Sa'id the mawla of Banu Hashim, from 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far, from Umm Bakr and Ja'far, from 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rafi', from al-Miswar.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among those who narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far and did not mention any other intermediary between Umm Bakr and her father al-Miswar (besides 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Uwaysi, who has already been mentioned) are: Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi [in Abu Bakr al-Khallal's "al-Sunnah" (655) and al-Bayhaqi 7/ 64]; Muhammad bin 'Umar bin Abi al-Wazir [in Abu Ya'la's "al-Musnad al-Kabir", as stated in Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (3951)]; Marwan bin Muhammad al-Tatari [in al-Ajurri's "al-Shari'ah" (1711)]; and Ibrahim bin Zakariyya al-'Abdi [in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" 20/ (33)].
Important point: The first part of the marfu' hadith is authentically established from al-Miswar bin Makhramah through routes other than this one, as explained under the earlier route no. (4787).
Important point: As for the second part of the marfu' hadith, it is also narrated from people other than al-Miswar, as explained under the earlier hadith of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), no. (4735).
