Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4796

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him for a servant. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Is what you have come to ask for more beloved to you, or that which is better than it?" She spoke (the narrator thought that she consulted Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him), then said: Tell me that which is better than it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma rabbas-samawatis-sab'i wa rabbal-'arshil-'azim, rabbana wa rabba kulli shay', munzilat-tawrati wal-injili wal-qur'an, faliqal-habbi wan-nawa, a'udhu bika min sharri kulli shay'in anta akhidhun bi-nasiyatih, antal-awwalu fa-laysa qablaka shay', wa antal-akhiru fa-laysa ba'daka shay', wa antaz-zahiru fa-laysa fawqaka shay', wa antal-batinu fa-laysa dunaka shay', iqdi 'annad-dayna wa aghnina minal-faqr' (O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of everything, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur'an, Splitter of the grain and the date-stone, I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold. You are the First, so there is nothing before You; You are the Last, so there is nothing after You; You are the Manifest, so there is nothing above You; and You are the Hidden, so there is nothing nearer than You. Settle our debt for us and enrich us, freeing us from poverty)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text between the brackets had dropped out of our manuscripts; it is established in the author's "Fada'il Fatimah" (144), in al-Nasa'i (7622), and elsewhere.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and its chain is "qawi" (strong).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hilal bin al-'Ala' al-Raqqi is "saduq la ba'sa bihi" (truthful, no harm in him), and he has been corroborated. Zuhayr is Ibn Mu'awiyah al-Ju'fi, Sulayman is al-A'mash, and Abu Salih is Dhakwan al-Samman.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (7622) narrated it from Hilal bin al-'Ala' al-Raqqi with this same chain.
Reference / Source: This hadith was recorded by Imam Muslim (2713), Ibn Majah (3831), al-Tirmidhi (3481), al-Nasa'i (7622) and Ibn Hibban (966) through various routes from Sulayman al-A'mash, with this same chain.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is "hasan gharib".
Note / Clarification: We say that Imam al-Hakim's including this hadith in his Mustadrak (i.e. counting it among narrations meeting the conditions of the two Sahihs or left out by them) is a kind of oversight (dhuhul) on his part.
Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by Imam Ahmad [14/ (8960), 15/ (9247), 16/ (10924)], Muslim (2713), Abu Dawud (5051), Ibn Majah (3873), al-Tirmidhi (3400), al-Nasa'i [(7621), (7667), (10558)] and Ibn Hibban (5537).
Details of the narration: All these narrations are via Suhayl bin Abi Salih, from his father (Abu Salih), from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make a supplication at the time of sleep; (in this narration) the supplication is mentioned, but Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) is not mentioned in it.
Note / Clarification: This narration has already passed with the author in abridged form under no. (2025).
Details of the narration: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) teaching Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) is reported on the occasion when she asked him for a servant; there he taught another supplication, different from the one mentioned here, and that narration has already passed under no. (4777).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i (which he narrates from Abu Usamah, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah) both supplications are mentioned together.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated it in "al-Du'a'" [as stated in al-Zabidi's "Ithaf al-Sadah al-Muttaqin" (1050)], al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" [as stated in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Fath al-Bari" 19/ 265], and Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (1280).
Grading and narrator: Although the narrator "Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i" is not strong, his narration here removes the difficulty, on the explanation that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught Sayyidah Fatimah both supplications.
Important point: Since these two supplications are also narrated separately via Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah in the story of Fatimah, it is not unlikely that Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i preserved the narration well here (jawwadahu), and Allah Most High knows best.
