Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4777

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and placed his blessed foot between me and Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), then taught us what we should say when we lie down in bed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Fatimah, when the two of you come to your bed, say Subhan Allah 33 times, Alhamdu lillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I have never left these words since. A man who had some resentment against Sayyiduna Ali asked: Not even on the night of Siffin? He replied: Yes, not even on the night of Siffin did I leave these glorifications.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been distorted into the dual form "taraktuhuma" (I left the two of them).

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "hasan" because of Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Abi al-'Awwam al-Riyahi (Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Yazid); he is saduq and he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/ 1229), and al-Nasa'i (10582) from Ahmad bin Sulayman al-Ruhawi; both of them (Ahmad bin Hanbal and Ahmad bin Sulayman) recorded it from Yazid bin Harun, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (740, 1141), al-Bukhari (3113, 3705, 5361, 6318), Muslim (2727), Abu Dawud (5062) and Ibn Hibban (5524, 6921) recorded it via al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah; and Ahmad (604), al-Bukhari (5362), Muslim (2727), al-Nasa'i (10581) and Ibn Hibban (5529) via Mujahid bin Jabr; both of them from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Important point: Mujahid in his narration, and al-Hakam in Ibn Hibban (at the first place), mentioned the "reason" why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught 'Ali and Fatimah this dhikr, namely that Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) had asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) for a servant, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them this dhikr.
Reference / Source: Something similar was recorded by Ahmad (838) via al-Sa'ib al-Thaqafi; Ahmad (996), al-Tirmidhi (3408, 3409), al-Nasa'i (9127) and Ibn Hibban (6922) via 'Ubaydah al-Salmani; Ahmad (1313) and Abu Dawud (2988) via 'Ali bin A'bad; Ahmad (1250) via Hubayrah bin Yarim; and al-Nasa'i (10583) via Shabath bin Rib'i; all of them narrate from 'Ali bin Abi Talib.
Important point: Regarding the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) teaching Fatimah when she asked for a servant, another supplication besides this one has also been reported, which will come with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (4796), and in one narration both supplications are combined, as will come; so the difficulty is removed, in that he (peace and blessings be upon him) taught Fatimah both supplications.

Note / Istidrak: Rather, both of them (al-Bukhari and Muslim) recorded this hadith, as has passed by two routes from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, so there is no "istidrak" (addition) upon them in it.
