Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4761

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla that I met Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Shall I not give you a gift that I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said: Certainly, do give me that gift. He said: We asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! How are we to send blessings upon you, that is, the Ahl al-Bayt? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta ala Ibrahima wa ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta ala Ibrahima wa ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid' (O Allah, send mercy upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as You sent mercy upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and upon the family of Ibrahim (peace be upon him); indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and upon the family of Ibrahim (peace be upon him); indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious)."
Imam al-Hakim says: Imam Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari has narrated this hadith with this same chain and wording, letter for letter, in his "al-Jami' al-Sahih". I have quoted it here only so that seekers of knowledge may know that the Ahl al-Bayt and the Al (family) are in reality one and the same. And Abu Farwah, that is, Urwah bin al-Harith al-Hamdani, is among the most reliable of the Tabi'in in Kufah.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "strong" (qawi) because of Abu Farwah (whose name is Muslim bin Salim al-Nahdi); he is saduq and there is no harm in him, and he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3370) recorded it from Qays bin Hafs and Musa bin Isma'il, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (30/ 18104, 18105, 18127), al-Bukhari (4797, 6357), Muslim (406), Abu Dawud (976), Ibn Majah (904), al-Tirmidhi (483), al-Nasa'i (1212, 1213, 9799) and Ibn Hibban (912, 1957, 1964) recorded it via al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah; and al-Nasa'i (10119) via Mujahid; both of them from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from Ka'b bin 'Ujrah. Some of them confined themselves to mentioning "the family of Ibrahim" without mentioning Ibrahim, and some to mentioning "Ibrahim" without his family.
Details of the narration: The first narration of al-Hakam in al-Nasa'i, his second narration in Ibn Hibban, and likewise the narration of Mujahid are all like the narration of "Abu Farwah", i.e. they mention both "Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim" together.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (1211) recorded it via 'Amr bin Murrah, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, with this chain.

Technical note / Correction: The author (al-Hakim) stated definitively that Abu Farwah in the chain of the hadith of Ka'b bin 'Ujrah is "'Urwah bin al-Harith", whereas in fact he is "Muslim bin Salim al-Nahdi", as Imam al-Bukhari specified in his "Tarikh" (5/ 164) in the biography of 'Abd Allah bin 'Isa bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (5/ 126).
