It is narrated from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin al-Hanafiyyah that people said to my father (Muhammad bin al-Hanafiyyah): "O Mahdi! Peace be upon you." He said: "Subhanallah! Did I not forbid you from this? The Mahdi is only the one whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, guides." A clear statement that the Commander of the Faithful Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) distanced a group from among his special followers and cut off ties with them, because they used to say things about Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) that they did not deserve, and they used to revile the other Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until those people separated from him and went off to Harura'; among them were Abdullah bin al-Kawwa' al-Yashkuri and Shabath bin Rib'i al-Tamimi.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of "'Adi bin 'Abd al-Rahman" (who is Ibn Zayd al-Ta'i); for a group narrated from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and al-Dhahabi said: "I know of no harm in him." Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (7/ 96), Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third part of his "Tarikh" (2055) and Ibn 'Asakir (54/ 347) recorded it via Abu Hamzah ('Imran bin Abi 'Ata' al-Qassab), who said: People would greet Muhammad bin 'Ali by saying: "Peace be upon you, O Mahdi!" He said: "Yes, I am a mahdi (rightly guided); I guide to right conduct and goodness. My name is the name of the Prophet of Allah and my kunyah is the kunyah of the Prophet of Allah, so when one of you greets, let him say: Salam 'alayka ya Muhammad, and al-salamu 'alayka ya Aba al-Qasim." Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
