It is narrated from Imam al-Sha'bi that when Ibn Muljam struck Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that blow, he made a bequest, saying: "He has struck me, so treat him well and keep his bedding soft. Then, if I live, it will be my right to forgive or to take retaliation (qisas); and if I die, then send him (by killing him) to join me, and I will bring my case against him before my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been distorted into "'Awn"; the correct form is "'Allun", and he is Muhammad bin 'Ali bin al-Haytham Abu Bakr al-Muqri', whose biography is in "Tarikh Baghdad" (4/ 141).

Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan); Muhammad bin Yunus (al-Kudaymi) is "matruk", and Mujalid bin Sa'id is "da'if". This report is narrated from al-Sha'bi ('Amir bin Sharahil) by a better route than this with different wording, but it is also narrated from others besides al-Sha'bi, in wording close to the wording here, with "good chains" (asanid jiyad).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/ 596) narrated it from 'Ali bin Mushir, from al-Ajlah, from al-Sha'bi, and mentioned in brief the story of Ibn Muljam killing 'Ali, and said in it: "'Ali said: If I die, then kill him if you wish, or leave him; and if I survive, there will be retaliation (qisas)."
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of al-Ajlah bin 'Abd Allah al-Kindi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 33), and al-Baladhuri (3/ 261), Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 558) and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 615), via al-Mundhir al-Thawri, from Muhammad Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, that 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He is a captive, so keep his lodging good and treat him honourably. If I live, I will (myself) kill him or forgive him; and if I die, then kill him, and do not transgress (do not mutilate him); indeed Allah does not love the transgressors."
Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated it in "Maqtal 'Ali" (86) and al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1600) via Abu Talq 'Ali bin Hanzalah bin Nu'aym, from his father, who said: When Ibn Muljam struck 'Ali, he said: "Detain him; it is only a wound. If I recover, I will take retaliation or forgive; and if I perish, you shall kill him."
Grading: Its chain is "capable of being graded hasan".
Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi (after no. 1825), Abu Bakr al-Qati'i (944) and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 555) narrated it via al-Hasan bin Kathir al-Ahmasi, from his father, from 'Ali, who said: "Detain the man; if I die, then kill him, and if I live, then wounds are subject to retaliation."
Grading: Its chain is "hasan", in sha' Allah.
Reference / Source: Al-Shafi'i narrated it in "al-Umm" (5/ 521), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (8/ 56 and 183) and "Ma'rifat al-Sunan" (16504), and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 557) from Ja'far bin Muhammad bin 'Ali, from his father: "'Ali used to go out for the dawn (prayer) with a whip in his hand with which he would wake the people, and Ibn Muljam struck him. 'Ali said: Feed him, give him drink and treat his captivity well. If I live, I am the guardian of his blood: I will forgive if I wish, and if I wish I will take retaliation (qisas)."
Grading: It is "mursal", and its narrators are "thiqah" in al-Bayhaqi's version at the first place in al-Sunan al-Kubra.
Important point: What has come in these narrations is "better established" than what comes later, that 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered him (Ibn Muljam) to be burned with fire after his killing. (That is, the narration about burning is not established.)
