It is narrated from Isma'il bin Abd al-Rahman that Abd al-Rahman bin Muljam al-Muradi fell in love with a Kharijite woman named Qatam from the tribe of Taym al-Rabab. He married her, and her dowry was fixed as three thousand dirhams and the killing of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Concerning this, al-Farazdaq said (in his verses): "I have never seen a dowry given by any generous man like the dowry of Qatam, perfectly plain: three thousand dirhams, a slave, a slave girl, and striking Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with the sharp sword. So there is no dowry dearer than the blood of Ali, however great it may be, and there is no treacherous deed like the blow of Ibn Muljam."

Grading: This report is "mursal hasan"; Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Rahman (al-Suddi) did not witness the event of the killing of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so his narration is mursal, but the story is well known. However, some attribute these verses to "Ibn Abi Mayyas al-Fazari" rather than al-Farazdaq, and some have attributed them to "'Imran bin Hittan". Reference / Source: The story of Ibn Muljam and the Kharijite woman was narrated similarly by al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (5/ 143), Abu al-Faraj al-Isbahani in "Maqatil al-Talibiyyin" (pp. 28-29) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (168) via Isma'il bin Rashid al-Sulami, "mursal". Al-Haythami said in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (9/ 14): "It is mursal and its chain is hasan." Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated in "Maqtal 'Ali" (88) from Sa'id bin Yahya al-Umawi, from his father, that he recited to his son the verses of Ibn Hittan about Ibn Muljam... and he mentioned the first two of these verses. Identification of the narrator: Ibn Hittan: he is 'Imran bin Hittan al-Sadusi, and he was one of the leaders of the Kharijites.
