Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4696

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this statement of Allah Almighty, "You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide" [Surah al-Ra'd: 7], that he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is the warner (mundhir), and I am the one who shows the path of guidance (hadi)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "extremely weak" (wahin). Al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis": "It is a lie; may Allah disgrace the one who fabricated it."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Harithi is not that strong. Husayn al-Ashqar is "da'if" and "munkar al-hadith", and more than one scholar accused him of lying. As for 'Abbad al-Asadi, al-Minhal is alone in narrating from him; Ibn al-Madini declared him weak, and al-Bukhari said: "fihi nazar" (he is questionable).
Reference / Source: Ibn al-A'rabi recorded it in his "Mu'jam" (4487) from Abu Sa'id Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Mansur al-Harithi, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abd Allah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded it in his additions to his father's "Musnad" (2/ 1041), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (7/ 2225), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (1361, 4923, 7780) and "al-Saghir" (739), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (14/ 345), Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 359) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah" (2/ 668, 669) by way of 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah, from al-Muttalib bin Ziyad, from al-Suddi, from 'Abd Khayr, from Ali, regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide" [al-Ra'd 13:7], he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is the warner, and the guide is a man from Banu Hashim."
Clarification: One of its narrators, Ali bin al-Husayn bin al-Junayd al-Hafiz (who narrates it from 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah), explained that he is "Ali bin Abi Talib".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: al-Muttalib bin Ziyad is a narrator about whom there is disagreement. 'Isa bin Shadhan al-Hafiz used to declare him weak, saying he has munkar reports; Muhammad bin Sa'd declared him "very weak", while others accepted him. And he is "alone" in narrating this report from al-Suddi.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter it is narrated from Abd Allah bin 'Abbas with al-Tabari (Tafsir: 13/ 108), Ibn al-A'rabi (Mu'jam: 2328), Abu Nu'aym (Ma'rifat al-Sahabah: 344) and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 359) by way of al-Hasan bin al-Husayn al-'Urani al-Ansari, from Mu'adh bin Muslim, from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: When the verse "You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide" was revealed, he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on his chest and said: "I am the warner", and he pointed with his hand to Ali's shoulder and said: "You are the guide, O Ali; through you those who are guided will be guided after me."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hasan al-'Urani was declared weak by Abu Hatim, Ibn Hibban and Ibn 'Adi. Mu'adh bin Muslim is "majhul". Sufyan al-Thawri contradicted them (see al-Tabari 13/ 107, Ibn Abi Hatim 7/ 2224, and Abu Tahir in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" 1900): he narrated from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, who said: "Muhammad is the warner, and Allah is the guide." This chain is "sahih" as a saying of Sa'id bin Jubayr; there is no mention of Ibn 'Abbas in it, and it gives a different explanation of "the guide" (namely Allah). Since al-Thawri heard from 'Ata' early on (before his confusion), al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's grading in "al-Fath" (13/ 447) of the route of Mu'adh bin Muslim from 'Ata' as "hasan" is not sound, even though al-Hafiz himself considered it "gharib" (strange).
Details of the narration: Rather, the opposite of what appears in the narration of Mu'adh bin Muslim from 'Ata' is narrated from Ibn 'Abbas. Ibn Abi Hatim (7/ 2224, 2225) recorded by way of Abu Dawud al-Hafari, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from al-Suddi, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that he said about the verse "You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide": "He is the warner and he is the guide (meaning the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him)."
Grading: Its chain is strong, but "more correct" is that it is 'Ikrimah's own statement and does not go beyond him, as Waki' and Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri (see al-Tabari 13/ 106, 107). And Allah knows best.
