It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "We used to recognise the hypocrites only by their denial of Allah and His Messenger, their lagging behind from the prayers, and their hatred of Ali bin Abi Talib."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "very weak" (da'if jiddan) because of Ishaq bin Bishr al-Kahili, who is "matruk" (abandoned), and some called him a "liar". Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain of al-Khatib in "al-Muttafaq wa al-Muftaraq" (220), Ishaq bin Bishr in this hadith is specified as "the nephew of Qays bin al-Rabi' al-Kufi" (Ibn Akhi Qays), and he is treated as a different person from al-Kahili. But the one narrating from him there is Abu Farwah Yazid bin Sinan al-Ruhawi, whose weakness is agreed upon. The specification by al-Hasan bin Ali al-Fasawi (who is la ba'sa bihi, acceptable) of Ishaq as "al-Kahili" is the "correct" one. And even if al-Ruhawi's statement were accepted as correct, Ishaq bin Bishr (the nephew of Qays) is not known and would be counted among the unknown narrators. Identification of narrators: Sharik is Ibn Abd Allah al-Nakha'i. Qays bin Muslim is al-Jadali. Abu Abd Allah al-Jadali's name is 'Abd bin 'Abd, and he is also called Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd. Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Sifat al-Nifaq wa Na't al-Munafiqin" (81) from Habib bin al-Hasan al-Qazzaz, from al-Hasan bin Ali bin al-Walid al-Fasawi, with this chain. Reference / Source: It is authentically established from Ali bin Abi Talib himself in Sahih Muslim (78) and elsewhere that he said: "By the One who split the seed and created the soul! It is the covenant of the unlettered Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to me: that none will love me except a believer, and none will hate me except a hypocrite." Reference / Source: Regarding staying away from the prayers, the statement of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is also authentically established in Ahmad (6/ 3623), Muslim (654) and elsewhere: "I have seen us (the Companions) when no one stayed away from it (the prayer) except a hypocrite whose hypocrisy was well known."
