Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4685

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say during the very lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, Allah Almighty says: 'If he then dies or is martyred, will you turn back on your heels?' [Surah Al Imran: 144] By Allah! After having received guidance from Allah, we will never turn back on our heels. By Allah, if he (peace and blessings be upon him) dies or is martyred, I will fight for the very cause for which he (peace and blessings be upon him) fought until I die. By Allah! I am his brother, his wali, his paternal cousin and the heir of his knowledge; so who could have a greater right to him than me?"

Grading: (2) Its chain has "layyin" (weakness).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Simak bin Harb is alone in narrating it from Ikrimah, and some scholars criticised his narration in the chain Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas on account of "inconsistency" (idtirab). Al-Dhahabi mentioned this report in "al-Mizan" in the biography of Amr bin Hammad bin Talhah and regarded it as munkar (unacceptable).
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8396) narrated it from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abdullah al-Naysaburi (who is al-Dhuhli) and Ahmad bin Uthman bin Hakim - the wording is Muhammad's, as al-Nasa'i said - both bringing it from Amr bin Talhah with this same chain.
Details of the narration: In it the wording is "and his heir", without restricting it to knowledge.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A group agreed with Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli on his wording, found in Ibn al-A'rabi's "Mu'jam" (734), al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (176), and Abu Bakr al-Qati'i's additions to "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1110).
