It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin Hind al-Jamali that he said: I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "Whenever I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for something, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would give to me (answer me), and whenever I remained silent, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would himself begin (a conversation of knowledge)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts the word "ibnah" (daughter) was corrupted to "Ahmad". The correct reading is: "Muhammad, son of the daughter of Ibn Hani'" (i.e. Muhammad, the son of Ibn Hani's daughter). His full name is Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Ali bin Bakr, son of the daughter of Ibrahim bin Hani', as his name is correctly given at hadith number (3503).

Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih", and, Allah willing, this chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although no one other than Awf (Ibn Abi Jamilah al-A'rabi) narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin Hind al-Jamali, this report of his was declared sahih by Ibn Khuzaymah (as Mughlatay reported in "Ikmal Tahdhib al-Kamal" 8/98); likewise al-Diya' al-Maqdisi declared it sahih in "al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah" (volume 2, hadith 614), al-Tirmidhi called it hasan, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar called him "saduq" in "al-Taqrib".
Important point: Abdullah bin Amr bin Hind's explicit statement here that he heard from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) refutes those who deny that he heard from Ali. His explicit statement of hearing from him also appears in another report, which al-Abbas bin Muhammad al-Duri recorded in his additions to "Tarikh Ibn Ma'in" (3896).
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3722) narrated it through the route of al-Nadr bin Shumayl, and al-Nasa'i (8450) through the route of Abu al-Musawir al-Fadl bin Musawir. Both of them brought it from Awf al-A'rabi. Imam al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is hasan gharib through this route."
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8451) narrated it through the route of Abu al-Bakhtari from Ali.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but Abu al-Bakhtari (whose name is Sa'id bin Fayruz) did not meet Ali (i.e. there is a break).
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8452) also narrated it through the route of Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali and through the route of Zadhan al-Kindi, both narrating it from Ali bin Abi Talib.
Grading: The chain of Abu al-Aswad's route is "sahih", while Zadhan's route contains an "unnamed" (mubham) narrator, the one narrating from Zadhan.
Details of the narration: There are other routes of it from Ali, among them the route of Hubayrah bin Yarim in al-Tayalisi (176) and others, and the route of Muhammad bin Umar bin Ali bin Abi Talib in Ibn Sa'd (2/292) and others. (Note: Muhammad bin Umar did not meet his grandfather Ali, although the narrators of the chain up to him are thiqah.)
