Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4666

It is narrated from Abu Abdullah al-Jadali that he said: I performed Hajj as a boy and passed through Madinah, and I saw the people going in crowds in one direction. I followed them, and they came to the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). I heard her say: "O Shabath bin Rib'i!" (That coarse, ill-mannered man replied: O mother! Here I am.) She asked: "Is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being reviled in your gatherings?" He said: "How could that be?" She said: "Is Ali bin Abi Talib not reviled (in your gatherings)?" He said: "We say such things (against him) for the sake of worldly gain." She said: "Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever reviles Ali has reviled me, and whoever reviles me has reviled Allah Almighty.'"

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak. Only one or two narrators narrated from Bukayr bin Uthman. Muhammad bin Bishr al-Abdi said: he was not well regarded among his people. We say: no declaration of his trustworthiness is reported from anyone.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ali bin Mushir narrated it, in Ali bin Muhammad al-Himyari (26) and Ibn Asakir (42/533), from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, but he did not mention Abu Abdullah al-Jadali, and made the story that of Abu Ishaq himself: that he performed Hajj as a boy and heard Umm Salamah (saying what she said to Shabath bin Rib'i). But Ali bin Mushir did not hear from Abu Ishaq, so the narration is broken (munqati'). And Abu Ishaq's meeting with Umm Salamah is not established.
Note / Clarification: The statement "idha al-nasu unuqun wahid" means: they were all travelling together.
