Grading: (1) Its chain is da'if; all the narrators below al-Qasim bin Ma'n are either weak or majhul. 42/ 573. Note / Clarification: That his age when he was killed was 63 or 64 is mentioned from the statement of Muhammad bin Umar bin Ali bin Abi Talib in al-Bukhari (al-Tarikh al-Awsat: 1/ 563), Ibn Abi al-Dunya (Maqtal Ali: 63), Abu Nu'aym (Ma'rifat al-Sahabah: 315) and Ibn Asakir (Tarikh Dimashq: 42/ 573). 572. Note / Clarification: That his age when he was killed was 63 is also narrated from Muhammad bin Ali bin Abi Talib (Ibn al-Hanafiyyah) (the author (al-Hakim): 4747), and likewise in one narration from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir (al-Tabarani: al-Kabir 165; Ibn Asakir: 42/ 19, 572). Note / Clarification: This is also the view of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i (Ibn Sa'd: 3/ 36 and others). 17. Important point: This is what Abu Zayd Umar bin Shabbah preferred (al-Tabari: 5/ 151), al-Waqidi relied on it (Ibn Sa'd: 3/ 36), and Ibn Sa'd (8/ 134) and Muhammad bin Habib al-Baghdadi (al-Muhabbar: 17) also relied on it. Note / Clarification: Two other views have been stated about his age on the day he was killed; see (the author: 4746) and "Tarikh Dimashq". Important point: As for the year of his death, namely the year 40 AH, it is agreed upon. Important point: As for the day on which Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, the apparent meaning of "qutila" (was killed) in this narration is "was struck". If that is correct, this narration agrees with the narration of al-Waqidi (al-Tabari: 5/ 151-152), who said: Ali was struck on the night of Friday; he lived through Friday and the night of Saturday, and died on the night of Sunday, when eleven nights of Ramadan remained, in the year 40 AH, at the age of 63. Al-Tabari also agreed with this and stated it firmly. Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn said the same (Ibn Asakir: 42/ 585), and al-Baladhuri (Ansab al-Ashraf: 3/ 253) said: "This is the established view." Note / Clarification: Similar is the statement of Isma'il bin Rashid al-Sulami (al-Tabari: 5/ 143; al-Tabarani: al-Kabir 168 and others): Ali was killed when seventeen nights of Ramadan had passed (i.e. he was struck). Here too "qutila" is to be taken in the sense of "duriba" (was struck). Note / Clarification: What contradicts this will come at (4739) from Hurayth bin Mukhashshi: that he was killed on the twenty-first night. Note / Clarification: Ibn Abd al-Barr related in "al-Isti'ab" (page 538) from Abu al-Tufayl, Zayd bin Wahb and al-Sha'bi that he was killed when eighteen nights of Ramadan had passed. And Allah knows best.
