Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This report is munkar, and there is disagreement over whether its chain is connected or mursal. In "Sirat Ibn Ishaq" (printed: 180), the narration of Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-Utaridi from Yunus bin Bukayr from Ibn Ishaq is mursal; Buraydah is not mentioned in it, but rather Abdullah bin Buraydah relates his father's story in the third person, not in the first person as in the narration of the author (al-Hakim). This shows that the narration in the "Sirah" is mursal. In the same part (176) the report also appears in abridged form: "The first of people to accept Islam was Ali, then three persons: Abu Dharr, Buraydah and Abu Dharr's cousin."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The second disagreement, in its text, is that the addition at the end (that revelation came on Monday and Ali prayed on Tuesday) is not in the copy of the "Sirah", even though that too is from the same narrator (Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar from Yunus); so this addition is interpolated (mudraj).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Yunus bin Bukayr contains nakarah (oddity), for Ali bin Ghurab narrated, in Ibn Abi Asim and al-Tabarani, from Yusuf bin Suhayb, from Abdullah bin Buraydah, from his father: "Khadijah and Ali were the first to accept Islam." This contradicts the narration of Yunus, since it mentions Khadijah and does not mention Abu Dharr and the others; this is another defect.
Details of the narration: Concerning Buraydah's acceptance of Islam, there is another narration in al-Waqidi (2/ 782) that he accepted Islam on the route of the Hijrah at "Ghadir al-Ashtat". In another narration of al-Waqidi (Ibn Sa'd: 4/ 228) it is stated that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached "al-Ghamim", Buraydah came and accepted Islam, and eighty households with him also accepted Islam.
Important point: According to al-Waqidi's narration, Buraydah's acceptance of Islam took place on the route of the Hijrah. This is supported by a narration of Buraydah himself (via Aws bin Abdullah bin Buraydah from al-Husayn bin Waqid and from his brother Sahl bin Abdullah bin Buraydah, both from Abdullah bin Buraydah from his father) that he met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with seventy riders of his household from Banu Sahm when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was heading from Makkah to Madinah, at a time when Quraysh had set a hundred camels as a reward for whoever would seize the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and return him to them.
Important point: These narrations make it clear that Buraydah accepted Islam during the Hijrah, which contradicts his being one of the first four Muslims (as in the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr); this is a third defect.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The well-known story of Abu Dharr's acceptance of Islam (Muslim: 2473) also contradicts the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr, for it indicates that Abu Dharr accepted Islam before the Hijrah (as suggested by the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). It also states that Abu Dharr, his brother Unays and their mother accepted Islam together, not with his cousin and Buraydah. And if this was shortly before the Hijrah, then Abu Dharr cannot be among the first four, since a group had accepted Islam before that.
Grading: This produces a clear contradiction between the narration of Muslim and the narration of Yunus.
Grading: These multiple aspects show the nakarah of the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr, and that it contradicts what is well known.
Grading: It contradicts what is well known about Buraydah's acceptance of Islam, and also contradicts what is authentic about Abu Dharr's acceptance of Islam.
Note / Clarification: The last part (revelation on Monday and Ali's prayer on Tuesday) is also narrated, apart from Buraydah, from Anas bin Malik (as in the following narration), but that is very weak and flimsy (wahin).
Reference / Source: It is also narrated from Jabir bin Abdullah in al-Tabari (2/ 310), and that too is flimsy; in its chain is Abd al-Hamid bin Bahr, who used to steal hadith (Ibn Hibban and Ibn Adi).
Reference / Source: It is also narrated from Abu Rafi' (the author: 4901); in its chain is Muhammad bin Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi', who is matruk.
